Interesting Blogging & Search Engine Statistics

Here are some fun search engine and blogging statistics I pulled up. I like doing this about once a year to see what is going on in the search space to see if there are any trends I’m missing. Plus, it’s just really interesting data to look at. Most comes from comscore, hitwise, and technorati. enjoy…

Blogging Statistics

* 28% of all visits to blogs in 2007 resulted in some kind of action (email signup, contact form, etc.)

* There are currently about 15.5 million active blogs (blogs updated within 90 days)

* Total blogs tracked by technorati: 74 million

* There are 120,000 new blogs being created every day

* 3,000-7,000 new spam blogs (splogs) created per day

* Total blog posts created per day: 1.5 million

* 36% of those blog posts were written in English

* The Japanese language now boasts more blogs than another language (37%)

Search Engine Statistics

* 75% of Americans use search engines on a regular basis

* 56% of Americans use Search Engines every day

* 40% of all search engine searches are for local businesses and services

* 54% of Americans regularly use the internet instead of the phone book to find local services

* 56% of Google users click the 1st organic result after a search query

* 25% of all search engine queries are unique (never been searched before)

* 92% of all local searches will eventually convert into a sale

* Roughly 10 billion search queries made per day

* Google’s share of search queries: 59.2%

* Yahoo’s share of search queries: 22.2%

These #'s show how what an important part "blogging" is to internet presence.  Great info.

05/16/2008 10:12 AM by Meridian Idaho Real Estate ~ Pam Pugmire (All Pro Realty)

Will a post/blog title that starts with an address of a listing be found quicker than a post that starts with the City & State and then the title?

My argument is that more people would start a search for the city and state first and then any real estate market information or address secondly.

Justin,

Power in numbers.

Thanks for sharing.

Happy Blogging.

05/16/2008 04:19 PM by Linda Lipscomb RE/MAX Lexington Henderson County TN

Well, that's a lot of blogging, splogging, and maybe some flogging, isn't it?

Cool info to read.  A comparison next year to these numbers will be quite interesting, I would think.  Bet the numbers will astound us, and even more telling would be to be able to see how many who were blogging last year and this year are around next year.

Thanks for the research!

Thanks for sharing. I have been telling my agents that today Google can help them excel if they market on the internet.

Wow. Some powerful numbers. I think this is good news for real estate agents who blog about their local businesses everyday. You are either number 1 locally, or you are going to fight for less than 45% of the search market in your niche. That's why I blog about my local Covington GA homes.

05/16/2008 04:59 PM by eric

Great stats to know. Thanks for your research

Hi Justin, Those were some astounding results. On Monday I will be working with Chris and perhaps he will teach me how to optimize my blog to be an integral part of those finding and transacting business. I can't wait. As always the Tomato leads the way for us.

Sincerely,

Justin,

25% of searches are unique is a high number, I think. Meaning when you dabble in keywords for your website content, this knowledge can make a big difference. Try to find unique keywords might be the secret.

05/16/2008 05:26 PM by Esko Kiuru - Las Vegas NV Mortgage Consultant (Sinifox Financial)

I would recommend looking at these statistics on a regular basis. It's important to keep up with the trends if you'd like to be up at the top.

05/16/2008 05:59 PM by Alan Robinson (PTE REAL ESTATE GROUP)

Justin - great new blog - but do send statistics more frequently than once a year. It seems very high that 28% of blog readers actually take action. That's wonderful news.

05/16/2008 07:08 PM by Sharon Simms St Pete Florida CRS CIPS CLHMS (RE/MAX Metro)

I want a bigger piece of the pie.  I am slowly working toward it.  Thanks for the moral boaster and the numbers

05/16/2008 09:09 PM by Russ Ravary - Michigan Homes for sale - Michigan Real estate & Mortgage info (Remerica Hometown One)

Hi Justin,

Thanks so much for the info, I love reading about this. It re-affirms our/my time spent online. I'm also going to be incorporating your results into my listing book. I'm doing my best to educate my sellers that it's about online marketing. IMHO print media is pretty much history.

05/16/2008 09:36 PM by Lynda Eisenmann, Orange County ~ Brea Real Estate

That is definitely very interesting stuff. I have never heard of splogs before. I think I have come across a few though!

05/16/2008 09:56 PM by Christy Powers - Pooler, Savannah Real Estate Agent (Keller Williams Coastal Area Partners)

This is amazing stats! If there are so many blogs out there, we certainly need to work harder to make sure we provide quality content for our readers.

Cheers,

Cindy

05/16/2008 10:21 PM by Dave Woodson (Indigo Financial Group Inc.)

Interesting numbers, Justin. The combination of "25% of searches are unique" and "92% of local searches result in a sale" certainly supports a well-designed long-tail (or money-tail) strategy.

05/16/2008 10:32 PM by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

I bet if you broke that down into Boomers vs. gen x and y the differences would be staggering.  I don't any of my friends that use a phone book and we all look online to check things out.

05/16/2008 10:50 PM by Melina Tomson, M.S. Salem Oregon Real Estate Specialist (Tomson Burnham, llc)

Justin: Great stats. Melina is probably right. I share an office with someone only 10 years younger than me. I grab the phone book and the dictionary. He googles. I feel so lame.

Yet, I blog and people of all ages find this totally amazing. Like it makes me some sort of computer genius.

Alas, you and the other tomatoheads know the truth.

Nice post and congrats on the feature.

05/16/2008 11:59 PM by Janet Guilbault, California Mortgage Expert (Peregrine Lending Company)

Justin....great statistics here.  I must have taken you quite some time to put them all together.

Thanks Justin.  I'm still waiting for my first referral from AR and your numbers tell me that it will happen if I make it happen.

05/17/2008 07:55 AM by Michelle Bowman-MD Realtor-Kent Island Keller Williams-Pasadena, MD/FT Meade (Keller Williams Realty)

Very interesting.  I watch my website statistics regularly and have seen that 47% to 54% of the people on my website find me directly using one of my domain names.  The rest did so via one of the search engines.  My goal is to capture an even higher percent once they find me initially via Google, Yahoo or such.

05/18/2008 11:36 AM by Kathy Anderson of KenMeadeRealty - Located in the heart of Sun City Grand (Ken Meade Realty)

Thanks for the stats, Justin. We are starting to see some activity after months of blogging. These figures are encouraging.

Thank you for the great information. It is really amazing to know how much people now rely on the Internet search to find things and how much opportunities we have to change our marketing accordingly.

Justin - thanks for that tip on using google alerts to find customers.  I keep meaning to try it and that was enough to convince me.  I just setup my first google alert -we'll see how it works!
