How to Keep a "Houdini Dog" in Your Yard

PepperI'd like you to meet my dog Pepper.  Living with Pepper has been interesting, to say the least.

I first met Pepper when I was volunteering at our local animal shelter as a dog walker.  I called him Otto because he reminded me of an ottoman, long and low.  He's a Border Collie/Basset Hound mix, with a big dog body on very short, sturdy legs.  While I knew that walking the dogs, photographing them and putting their information online was helping, I didn't feel like it was "enough".  I wanted to SAVE somebody.

It couldn't be just any dog.  I needed one that was gentle enough not to hurt the older dog I already had.  I have two cats, so that would have to be considered, too.  He needed to love people.  He needed to be HOUSETRAINED.  I knew Pepper had a great personality, and when the shelter workers told me that he'd let himself out of his cage when he had to go to the bathroom, I knew he was very well housetrained, too.  What I didn't think about was what a challenge such a smart dog can be.

Pepper was in the animal shelter for a reason.  He's a Houdini Dog.  Perhaps you have one or you know one.  Pepper knows how to open gates and go under fences.  When Pepper gets the urge to run free, it's hard to contain him.  I have had to become an expert on dog containment.

Keeping him from opening the gates was easy enough, we just added locks.  Keeping him from going under the fence was a bigger challenge.  I did a little research online and learned that there are several things you can do.

  • One is burying the fence a few inches underground during installation.  That would have been great, but our fence is already in.
  • Another was pouring a little trench of cement under the fence.  If Pepper were digging his way out, this would work.  However, Pepper knows that the chain-link fence will FLEX, and all he has to do is stick his nose under it and PUSH.

Fence StakesEventually I found ground stakes from Best Friend Fence.  These stakes have a curved top (to catch the bottom of the chain link fence) with a flat surface, making it easy to hammer them into the ground.  The length of the stake is a zig-zag "lightning" shape that keeps the stake firmly in the ground.  You can see one in the photo at left, and just behind it are the tops of two that have been hammered into the ground.  (Sorry about the leaves, this is West Virginia after all.)  They were easy to hammer into the ground but seem to be holding very well.  They have passed the very difficult "Pepper Test" with flying colors.  They were affordable, well made and easy to use, so they pass my test as well.

Whether you have a client with a pet need or a Houdini Dog of your own, I can recommend these stakes from experience.

Great info to have.  I remember as a kid, we rescued a Dalmatian.  Waay to much to handle, as it turned out.  she would leap over our 6 foot block fence with no problem at all.  I don't think that constitutes as Houdini, more pure luck.

Great idea for chain fences, especially homes with older fences that have seen better days!  My neighbor has a dog that is always loose and it drives my dogs crazy!

Great tip Sarah,

I'm sure your customers appreciate this helpful information.  There are so many people out there who are animal lovers with similar dilemmas.   Keep up the good work!

Sarah,

I can see you would be right at home in NM, and I know you saw my post about the steps we are taking to help animals in NM. We must have been on the same wave length. We need lots more people like you. Pepper looks very special. I can see why you had to have him.

I LOVE Otto! He' my kind of dog! I have an escape artist also that I got from a animal rescue group called Fogotten Friends. Her name is Raisin and she's so sweet I couldn't believe she spent a whole year at the rescue and no one adopted her? Well she's a border collie and can clear a 6' fence with flying colors! How do you stop that? I bet her and Otto would get along great!

Hi, Elena!  Oh, Dalmatians have all kinds of energy, don't they?  We were stumped for a while how Pepper was getting out, for a moment we considered he might have been jumping over -- then we cracked up laughing because of his four inch legs.  It HAD to be under, not over.

Hi, Ravi!  There's nothing that gets my dogs wound up like a loose dog!  It might be a territorial urge, but I kind of think they're jealous.  :o)

Hey, Lisa!  Thanks!  Loooove your signature!

Hi, Eloise!  Yes, KUDOS to New Mexico for their work for the animals!!  Clap-clap-clap!  That was a very nice post and I loved the pictures, too.  I meant to tell you how much I liked the one of your friend with her line of animals following her.  I'll have to stop back by and mention it.

Hey, Danny!  My Hero!  :oD  Actually, we found out his name was really Pepper (his former owner decided not to keep him and let us have him) and we THOUGHT he would answer better to his "real" name.  We were wrong.  Pepper is very smart, but he's also very self-involved.  When you call him, he stops to think about it.  If he thinks there might be something in it for him, he'll come.  I hope your Raisin is more like our Sam and just stays in the yard because that's the rule.

Thanks all for your comments!

One of my former neighbors had a Houdini dog. Tragically, she was hit on the busy street near our homes when she got out so this is a big safety concern. Thanks for the excellent suggestion.

Daisy the BeagleSarah: Can Pepper come out and play? I’m Daisy a Beagledogperson and I am part of Boardmanpack. The peopledogpack leaders are “Boomer” Jack & Teresa Boardman. My favorite codgerpeopledog is Jay (and I just snuck on AR using Jay’s password). Pepper is very handsome. Peopledog Boomer says I’m “fixed” so he doesn’t mind if I have dogpeople boyfriends. Did I mention that Pepper is very handsome?

Pepper seems like a great dog! I have a Border Collie and am amazed at just how smart she is.  Good luck !

Hi Sarah-

I know what you mean about smart dogs!

I don't have any pets right now - I do miss having a dog, but I'm never home to take care of one -

I know! I'll put one in the office - nobody will notice......

Hi Sarah,

I am so glad you found a solution!

Our Bella got out last year about a week after we adopted her

We came home late and she was not in the  yard.

Out till 2am putting up flyers. Got her back the next morning at 8.

She had gotten out from a loose picket.. We were so panicked!

Thank God she wandered into an dog lovers yard about 1/2 mile away and they kept her overnight in their screened porch, next morning they saw our poster on the way to school

Irene - That is my fear about Pepper.  He tends to run out of our neighborhood and straight for the main road, where all the "action" is.

Jay & Medford - My kids LOVED your comment!!  Daisy is ADORABLE!!  Now the kids keep talking about Pepper's new Girlfriend.  Love it!

Michael - Yep, you gotta' keep an eye on Border Collies.  They're smarter than a lot of people I know.  ;o)

Marc - An office dog sounds like the perfect solution to me!  Let me know how that works out for you.

Ginger & Roger - I'm SO glad you got her back!!  A similar thing happened when Pepper opened our gate and took of in the company of our older dog, Sam.  They ended up nearly two miles away and I got a call from a Mom who said they followed her son home from the bus stop.  They kept them there with doggie treats until I could get there.  Whew!

My name is Chip.  I do NOT have opposable thumbs (so I shouldn't be as bright as you humans).  Still, I am not without resources.  I can climb.  I have incredible amounts of testosterone which can "will" me over most normal fences....  If only my neighbors had a gate.

LOL!  Chip is ADORABLE!!!!  :o)

So Chip has ended up in the neighborhor's yard too, eh?

We know that little trick!  Thanks for commenting, Chris!

Baylin ( from  the" I found my twin on AC" story) is a Houdini & goes under his flexible fence.  I attached it to 4x4's all the way around.  He is so sad now.

Sarah,

I adopted a dog from the pound. He is an inside dog. I don't have a fenced in yard yet. I do have a large kennel with tarp & dog house. He refuses to get in it. So... I put him out on 20 ft steel cable when he has to go out. But he always manages to get himself  unhooked if he is out for more than 10 minutes! We do go running. I have a tread mill we run on also.,I can't figure out how he can unhook himself from his cable when I let him out.

Any solutions ? I  just bought my home and plan to get a fence but for now I need help!!!!!!!!

Hi, Shelley!  I'd say call the Humane Society and ask for advice.  They help place foster dogs so they are ALWAYS dealing with new dog issues.  If you're local, ours can be reached at (304) 562-0300 or 586-5315.

He runs on a treadmill?  That's so cute!!

Those stakes may work until Pepper discovers he can pull them up ;)  I had a white German Shepherd female who jumped fences, broke heavyweight tie out chains, and even pulled down a porch post she was tied to!  That, combined with her freedom reflex made her very difficult to keep around.

Poodles are notorious escape artists.  Everytime I think that I have them out foxed there is a jail break.

Nice article! I will be saving this page to my favorites for sure. I just visited a site with great articles and products on Dog Containment! If nothing else it's a great read. Check it out if you have time!

Sarah, I'm glad you found a solution. My problem is not with the backyard because our dogs are mostly inside all the time.  What I have to look out for with mine is a run out of the front door! ;-)

Hi, I don't have a hudini dog....I have 2!!! Beagles, and man they are smart. I have tried just about everything and I don't know how they get out. I've never seen how they do it. One minute they're there and the next they are not....We live next to a University and the same student has found them 3 times already! They're little escape artists! LOL...gotta love 'em!

02/23/2008 10:51 PM by Genevie

I too have several Houdini dogs. A tension wire at the bottom of the fence works too as do tent staakes. I just hope that no one learns how to scale the fence. My white poodle has climbed out of a 4 foot X pen when she was still a baby.

My son had a Schnauzer who was Houdini re-incarnated, I do believe LOL.  This is really great information.

Hi All!  How about the FABULOUS invisible fence???  I think it is the best invention ever!  I have 3 bird dogs who stay put in my yard with the invisible fence.  Some say it is cruel, but it is the safest ever - my dogs don't even think going off premises - they each had a small, quick shock when it was installed, now they hear the beep that preceeds the shock and they back up.  I feel secure with them enclosed with the invisible fence.  I highly recommend it!
