Synthetic Pili Grass by Endureed: Replicates Authentic Hawaiian Thatched Roofs
Pili grass is a common plant indigenous to Hawai’i. This grass belongs in the genus Heteropogon and the species contortus. Its scientific name is Heteropogon contortus. Pili grass is also commonly called lule grass, spear grass, tanglehead and twisted beardgrass.
Pili grass naturally grows on dry land found on cliffs and ledges. Its natural habitat is generally found at an elevation of around 700 meters. Sometimes, you can find pili grass growing on rocky slopes. Summertime moisture is a must for proper pili grass growth. It has a simple leaf that is 10 to 30 cm long and just 0.6 cm wide.
Pili, by definition means “to stick together.” It got its name because it sticks to neighboring plants as it grows. Unfortunately, this indigenous Hawaiian plant is diminishing on both O‘ahu and Moloka‘i. Hawaiians have used this grass for thatched roofs, flooring pads and to make black dye. Unfortunately, demand for thatching around the world has helped reduce this grass’ proliferation.
Endureed replicates pili grass as part of our Kona synthetic thatching. Kona is a product in our Regions series. Our synthetic thatching is environmentally friendly and helps fill the demand for pili grass thatching by resorts, theme parks, and other businesses.
