New Housing Starts September 2017

On October 18, 2017, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits declined 4.5% to 1,215,000 units in September of 2017 from 1,272,000 units in August of 2017, and decreased 4.3% from 1,270,000 units in September of 2016. Single family building permits were up 2.4% to a rate of 819,000 units in September of 2017 from 800,000 units in August of 2017, and there were 360,000 multi family building permits issued in September of 2017.

Nationwide housing starts dropped 4.7% to 1,127,000 units in September of 2017, from 1,183,000 units in August of 2017, but gained 6.1% from 1,062,000 units in September of 2016. Single family starts fell 4.6% to a rate of 829,000 units in September of 2017 from 869,000 in August of 2017, and there were 286,000 multi family building starts in September of 2017.

Nationwide housing completions increased 1.1% to 1,109,000 units in September of 2017 from 1,097,000 units in August of 2017, and jumped 10.3% from 1,005,000 units in September of 2016. Single family completions rose 4.6% to a rate of 781,000 units in September of 2017, from 747,000 units in August of 2017, and there were 322,000 multi family completions in September of 2017.
