Sunday Thoughts: Don't Put Off Fun Until You Retire

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

Searching for a photo of the Mexican desert yesterday, I ran across this photo of me from 2007 in Cabo San Lucas. This is when I realized I have changed since then. More wrinkles, less hair. But there is one thing that has not changed, and that's my attitude, including the fact it's important to have fun. That year was the first big year in Sacramento short sales for me, having started those in 2006. It didn't peak until maybe 2010-2011 when I was juggling 75 escrows at a time.

All of that work is what lead up to my success today as a top producer in Sacramento. Yeah, after that experience, I'm on vacation all the time now, LOL. But one thing I fiercely clung to back then was to have fun, to do things that I found enjoyable and not put them off solely for the sake of work.

You know how people say they will take this vacation or enjoy this type of activity after they are retired? Well, what if you never make it to that point?

I say do it today. Enjoy the journey.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel My husband is one of those people who struggles with having fun. He prefers adversity. Good thing he has ME. I do know how to have fun!

You have the right attitude my friend.  Life is too short (at least this one) and we need to seize the day when we can.  Carpe Diem.

Hi Elizabeth

I could do a better job of having more fun, but having the grandkids helps take me away from work and enjoy myself, and them!!

Life is meant to be enjoyed and experienced - and it's easy to fall into the habit of putting that off while we work hard.  Good reminder!

While we're on the subject of travel, Elizabeth, as well as Ron and Alexandra Seigel , have any of you visited the Seychelles?  We are considering a trip, but just the planning right now seems a little overwhelming, not to mention the freaking length of the flight.  LOL  No, I'm not really whining, but if you've been and have any helpful tips, I'd appreciate it.  Haven't made the commitment to go, but it's on our list.

Susan Haughton There are so many islands to choose from in the Seychelles. I had thought about going there in 2014 for a winter vacation, and was attracted to the Banyon Tree Villas (the ocean view at Four Seasons is NOT that dramatic). However, it's very expensive, I thought, in comparison to what you got. I wanted my own villa with a plunge pool. I discovered I could get that in Vanuatu on Efate for half the cost, so I went there instead. That is a long haul, tho, to Port Vila. First you have to go to Australia, LOL. They might have even recovered from the storm of 2015 by now.

Or you can find just as beautiful places in Mexico for less as well.

Elizabeth- this is so true for everyone. We had a neighbor/friend who bought his "retirement" home two doors down from us. When he did retire, he moved to a golf course community fairly close but sadly he didn't get to spend even more than a few years there before he had a heart attack in our driveway.

Enjoy every day!

Elizabeth, you do enjoy life with Adam, and we do need to have lots of fun today, as some day we may be too old to enjoy it as much.

I have always looked at life as having some form of balance between work and play.  I have been surrounded with very successful people, who were workaholics, who often ignored the play part of life.  They spent it knocking on a psychiatrist's door instead.

Myrl Jeffcoat Thank you for the feature, Mryl. You know, I work with a lot of people of a certain age, and I hear them say all the time what they will do when they retire, and I'm constantly encouraging them to do it NOW. You could get hit by a bus tomorrow.
