Layton Construction Co. the general contractor hired by the Howard Hughes Corp. to oversee the demolition of the 42 year old Ward Warehouse shopping center plans to have the properties current structures demolished by years end, as reported in the Pacific Business News. The Howard Hughes Corp. has started demolition on the former retail shopping center with the intent of replacing the current structures with a Two Tower Ultra Luxury Residential condominium complex overlooking the Kewalo basin and commercial boat harbor.
The Ward Warehouse shopping center was originally developed structurally as a temporary commercial solution that was envisioned to evolve into a more substantial retail foot print. Those plans never came to fruition. Enter the Howard Hughes Corp to the neighborhood and the tired and rambling industrial retail environment is scheduled to be transformed into one of the crown jewels of the Ward Village condominium build out projects being developed over the next 20 years. Howard Hughes Corp. just recently completed two of it's Luxury Residential Condo projects, the Waiea and the Anaha at Ward Village in the rapidly developing neighborhood of Kaka'ako.
Pre-sales for Gateway Towers, designed by architect Richard Meier & Partners, started about two years ago however there is no set date for the start of construction, according to the developer of the up and coming Ward Village. The Gateway Towers offers 1, 2, and 3+ bedroom condos and are priced from $1.5 million to over $20 million. Move in dates are scheduled for late 2019.
