I made a mistake in my last blog, Sneaky Santa. Some, maybe even most charities, will take a check with a smile and a big "Thank You" and they'll spend the money as carefully as they can. But the Girl Scouts cookies....
Those cookies aren't just the cash: the young women selling those power-powder-dripping Savannah Smiles, the to-freeze-or-not-to-freeze Thin Mints, the Do-Si-Dos Peanut Butter Sandwiches begging to be dipped in chocolate syrup like their younger but still prettier Tagalongs Peanut Butter Patties sisters, are learning as they sell those cookies. Marketing, budgeting, negotiation and interpersonal skills. The troops choose what to do with the money they earn, for anything from camping trips in the area to a better chance for performing a local service project.
So Santa can buy those boxes with glee. And give them to his local firefighters, or send them overseas to our servicepeople, or hand a box to an elderly shut-in neighbor. And keep a box for himself. Really. 'Cause sorry, Santa, nothing homemade this year.
