WAIT! Santa can buy cookies & eat them too

I made a mistake in my last blog, Sneaky Santa. Some, maybe even most charities, will take a check with a smile and a big "Thank You" and they'll spend the money as carefully as they can. But the Girl Scouts cookies....

Those cookies aren't just the cash: the young women selling those power-powder-dripping Savannah Smiles, the to-freeze-or-not-to-freeze Thin Mints, the Do-Si-Dos Peanut Butter Sandwiches begging to be dipped in chocolate syrup like their  younger but still prettier Tagalongs Peanut Butter Patties sisters, are learning as they sell those cookies. Marketing, budgeting, negotiation and interpersonal skills. The troops choose what to do with the money they earn, for anything from camping trips in the area to a better chance for performing a local service project.

So Santa can buy those boxes with glee. And give them to his local firefighters, or send them overseas to our servicepeople, or hand a box to an elderly shut-in neighbor. And keep a box for himself. Really.  'Cause sorry, Santa, nothing homemade this year.

I haven't eaten Girl Scout cookies in many years, but when presented with an order form by an excited Girl Scout, do order boxes for soldiers. That makes me smile.

Kat Palmiotti I have a Thin Mints problem. But I do also buy an extra for servicepeople.

Good morning Lauren. Home made or store or girl scout bought, the thrill of getting cookies is in the love that drove them.

Oh, now you have me craving a frozen Thin Mint, Lauren! Love buying extra boxes for others and surprising them with a stop by delivery - it certainly does lift one's heart, doesn't it?!

Debe Maxwell, CRS The Thin Mints are my favorite as well. The powdered-sugar lemon ones second. It does feel good to give some away: I go the "buy a box for our military personnel" route.
