World's Largest Ponderosa Pine Forest

Arizona has the largest continuous belt of ponderosa pine forest in the world. It stretches uninterrupted from New Mexico to the Grand Canyon. There are 2.4 million acres of forest land with ponderosa pine. The forests consist of Coconino (where Sedona is) Tonto, Kaibab, and Apache-Sitgreaves.

This Summer Rick and I celebrated our 45 Wedding Anniversary and our son gave us a gift certificate for a "hog wild" tour.

We would never do this on our own. We decided to wait until Fall to see the color. Well, we still don't have much color...probably 2-3 weeks away. Bummer! 

However it was amazing! Both of us were snapping pictures and taking video. So future posts will have images of our red rock landscape from the air! It was a pretty clear day so these shots should be something to see.

Good point Grant Schneider - Yes! (Of course not like NY) but Oak Creek Canyon has Oaks and Aspens and other trees. Here is an example. Most of the trees still have to turn.Oak Creek Canyon Fall

I think they may have borrowed the name from a BBQ joint called "Hog Wild".  If you can go on a "Pilot's Choice" ride always go with that one. I have been on 3 like that and the pilot chooses the areas they think are best. ...Have not been let down yet!

Hi Nina Hollander - Until I got to Sedona, I was a city girl also!  I know ponderosa from the TV show in 1960's called Bonanza on NBC. One of the first shows shot in color.

Hi Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 - I can't wait to share more. This ranks up there with my Maui and Kauai flights but Alaska is still number 1.  We landed on a glacier and were able to roam around. They the pilots flew us up to the start of 4 glaciers at the top of the world.
