The George Washington Society is hosting a talk on Monmouth, the Battle that Silenced George Washington's Critics by author Garry Wheeler Stone on Thursday, November 2 at 6 p.m. at the Ed Oliver Golf Club. 800 N. DuPont Road, Wilmington. Buffet dinner $25. RSVP KimBurdick@aol.com.
First Saturday in the First State is coming up on November 4, and the popular First State Heritage Park's 18th Century Market Fair is back. This free event is fun for the whole family. Living history trades and craft demonstrations, entertainers, food--all with an 18th century twist! Rain or shine, on the Green in downtown Dover, Delaware. Includes guided tours of Legislative Hall and the Old State House.
Winterthur Two events upcoming on November 4 are worth noting. 1) Treasures Revealed Appraisal Day from 9:30-1 in the Visitor Center will bring Freeman's Auction House evaluating your antiques, jewelry and fine arts. Registration required. 2) Former museum Deputy Director Brock Jobe will speak on five New England pieces collected by Henry Francis duPont and explain their groundbreaking significance. Brock always draws a crowd, so be sure to reserve in advance. Other November events sponsored by Winterthur include the 54th Annual Delaware Antiques Show November 10-12 at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington. The keynote lecture will be 10 a.m. Friday with Gil Schafer III, an architect often featured in Architectural Digest. And then, November 18 to January 7, Yuletide at Winterthur will be on display, an always spectacular event. It will again feature an 18 room doll house designed by Nancy McDaniel.
The Delaware Historical Society will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I through a series of public programs starting in November. DHS was awarded a programming grant from the Library of America that is part of a two-year initiative involving public programs in all fifty states, a traveling exhibition, a multimedia website, and the publication of the World War I and America anthology, which includes writings by Americans who experienced the war. In addition to the programming grant, the Society will also host the associated traveling panel exhibition for the month of November in Old Town Hall.
Planning ahead for December:
Christmas in Odessa on December 2 from 10-5 is a self-guided walking tour of private homes and public buildings decorated for the holidays. Benefitting a scholarship fund, it is sponsored by theWomen's Club of Odessa, Delaware. Tickets are $25 or $20 in advance (see website). Wilson-Warner House

The Friends of Springton Manor present the Springton Ladies Tea, "Clothes Make the Woman-18th Century Style" on November 12 from 1-3 p.m. at Springton Manor Farm, 860 Springton Road, Glenmoore. An array of teas, finger sandwiches and desserts will be served. This program helps support projects at Springton Manor Farm. Preregistration required. Fee $40. More information.
Historic Yellow Springs presents their Fine Arts & Craft Show, November 18 & 19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are located at 1685 Art School Rd, Chester Springs, PA 19425. Opening Reception on Friday, November 17 from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm. This is a juried show featuring original work in Ceramics, Glass, Wood, Paper, Fiber Arts, Photography, Jewelry and more displayed in a gallery setting.
History on Tap:Paoli's Corsican Connection will be presented Tuesday, November 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Landmark Americana, 158 W. Gay Street

Sponsored by the Chester County Historical Society, you will hear Ed Auble speak about Corsican patriot Pasquale di Paoli and how his work led to the Corsican constitution, which led to the U. S. Constitution and the reason Paoli, Pennsylvania is connected to Corsica. RSVP, suggested contribution $10, CCHS members free, dinner extra.
The East Brandywine Historical Commission is presenting a program by architect Dan Campbell on the Brandywine Area Mills on Sunday, November 19 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at 1214 Horseshoe Pike, Downingtown 19335. Dan is a registered architect with over thirty years of experience in architecture and historic preservation and will present a slide show, out-lining techniques used in finding and documenting historic mills. He is also Board Secretary of the nationwide society for the Preservation of Old Mills and President of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter.

Chester County Historical Society in West Chester's Holiday & Greens Sale and Luminarias on December 8 & 9 from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. will feature hancrafted wreaths, floral arrangements, ornaments and garlands, plus greens and holly by the bag and baked goods. Special pricing for CCHS members; admission to sale and museum free to all during sale.
