Charlottesville is located in West Central Virginia. It is approximately 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 70 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia.

It was established as a town in 1762 by the Virginia General Assembly and was incorporated as an independent city in 1888.  It is the county seat of Albemarle County.

This mid-sized college town is situated within the upper Piedmont Plateau, at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and at the headwaters of the Rivanna River.

Infused with a rich history, Charlottesville VA has been home to three presidents- Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Monticello, the primary residence of Thomas Jefferson, is located just outside of Charlottesville in the Piedmont region.

The community also has several vineyards, breweries, shops, restaurants, and parks. Visitors often come to the area for wine and beer tours.

If you love the outdoors, you can head over to the nearby Shenandoah Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area offers recreational activities and beautiful scenery, with rolling mountains and many hiking trails. Hiking, kayaking, and horseback riding are popular activities during the summer, while the winter offers skiing and snow-tubing.

Charlottesville also is home to the University of Virginia, a public research university and the flagship for the Commonwealth of Virginia. More than 20,000 students from all 50 states and 148 countries attend the university during the academic year.

Charlottesville is also host to the annual Virginia Film Festival. VFF takes place on October at venues throughout Charlottesville. It brings in a fascinating selection of guests, from internationally acclaimed directors and actors to professors and leading cultural experts.
