Multiple Websites - Don’t Do It!This article was originally published on the Home Value Leads blog.

If you have one real estate website and have seen some success over time from it, then you probably have thought about creating a few more. After all, three sites mean three times the traffic, right?

Wrong!

You have probably noticed that many large companies have separate websites for different lines of their business or specific promotions, for example. However, in order to effectively run multiple sites like they do, you have to follow certain “rules”.

SEO

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the practice of using keywords to ensure that your website ranks highly in your audiences’ searches. If you have content on one website, then you will likely want to just copy over that content, say from a blog post, into one of your other sites. This is a big no-no for search engines like Google, which penalize websites by lowering their rank for repeat content.

A possible workaround is taking content from one site and rewording it so that it is not identical to the original. But that just leads to our next issue.

Time

In order to make each of your websites original, it’s going to take a lot of time on you or your team’s part. Even if you had the money to have someone else do it, you still have to take the time to review and help edit design and content on a regular basis.

It’s hard enough to maintain one website, let alone two or more. In addition, with so little time (you are meeting with clients, selling houses and attending showings, right?!), We may only have hours in the day to focus on one really, really good website.

Effort

Just like the issue with time, the amount of effort that you would have to put into maintaining multiple websites can be overwhelming. To do it right, then you would have to take some serious effort to put together a game plan for each website, meeting schedule, and action keep up with it.

Any serious website will have ever-changing content through, say, a blog. Developing the content and even planning guest posts would take a serious amount of energy. That’s effort that you should really be devoting to building relationships and thereby building your real estate business.

So, what do you think? Are you and your business up for multiple sites? Or do you think they could do more harm than good?
