Paying It Forward...The Rome Way

There is a November challenge hosted by Belinda Spillman .

With ActiveRain we see members, every single day, paying it forward...helping others and helping each other. This entire platform is a caring group that I am glad to be a part of.

A few years ago, I wrote about this

elderly couple who had to give up their pet

when buying a condo. Pets were not allowed.

It was some time after-wards that I learned about ESA Emotional Support Animals, Care and Comfort pets, in addition to the ADA protected service dogs.

This has been  been dealt with some strong emotions from places that are not pet friendly. I have placed a small awareness ad like this

Emotional Support Animal

and received an irate call  from a condo board stating I was encouraging pets where they were not allowed.

Every week calls come in from the public about their need to move with an animal.

We, as Realtors®, hear these stories and we can make a difference..but only if we all get educated.

Find out which communities, HOA and Condos are pet friendly. Find out how to certify a legitimate service or emotional animal. It is so much less stressful finding out this information before your client is under contract.

Moving is emotionally charged without adding to the possibility of "losing" your four legged family member.

Becoming more involved with the Maryland SPCA, supporting them and having a place to get the right answers is something I would like to see agents around the country do the same in their local areas.

Morty Gorn Adoption Center

There are so many professionals on AR that already support and speak out for these animals...way too many too mention.

Each time this subject is brought up...you see many members and how they promote pet friendly real estate.

Today, I dedicated my live radio show to this subject.

Katie Flory the Community Affairs Director of the Maryland SPCA and my friend and board member Karen Colvin were guests  giving so much helpful information.

Check out the SPCA and this adoption

People were listening...I'm still getting texts and emails.

Margaret- when Larry and I moved to Florida, we had 2 dogs. We wanted to rent first to get to know the area. You can imagine how we felt when our agent told us we would have to get rid of the dogs because we'd never find a rental. I almost reached across the desk for her neck. We did find a home that took both of our dogs. Elyse Berman, PA, CRS does a very good job of finding pet-friendly homes and condos.

Good morning, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland animals take it on the chin because their owners are not caring for them properly....  and my grandchildren have goldies and just the thought of not having them would be horrific.

Margaret

Thank you for this post! I cannot imagine having to give up a loved pet because of some rules that don't allow them. It's particularly hard for tenants since many landlords don't allow them even though the HOAs do.

... a small office, delivering big service!

Very important topic here.  I lost my dog in July and although he was not a "certified" emotional support dog he was one none the less.  We need to be aware of the place pets fill in our customer's lives and support them when we can!

Pets are a very important part of many people's lives.   We are seeing an increase in ESA animals, especially as part of PTSD therapy for our men and woman returning from the war.  ESA animals are specially trained, and not your run of the mill pet.

I just commented on a post by Debe Maxwell, CRS . That post spoke about pet adoption. For some, that unconditional love, the companionship as well as having a mutually dependent on each other relationship is a blessing and a necessity, especially for those that live alone.

This is definitely an issue for those land lords who don't want any pets.  I have one such listing right now. The building doesn't allow pets, service animals obviously excluded from that limitation, but the owner doesn't want any pets either.  We've had to relay that to several potential tenants, including one with a service cat.  Pet dander is definitely an issue for many people, me included.  I'm allergic to almost all dogs and cats and my landlord just installed all new carpet, so does not want pets.  While I agree wholeheartedly in the life giving benefits of pets, the rest of us sneeze and suffer through pets.  It's definitely a decisive issue for many.

It's great to let your clients know if pets are allowed, even if they don't have a pet themselves. Sometimes the client has an allergy and doesn't want to have to deal with sneezing all the time. Then for those that do have pets, it is comforting to know that they can take their furry family members with them. Thanks for sharing!

Oh MY! I have no idea how I missed this post, Margaret but, what a wonderful post! Like you, fur babies own a huge part of my heart and I can't imagine not supporting someone who needs a service animal either. I know your clients are so thankful to have you in their corner - LUCKY, LUCKY clients!

Glad you got such a good response from your radio show and what a wonderful topic to address. I believe it's one that most of the public is unaware of.

Hope you're having a great weekend!
