Have you ever heard about the large list of Banned Books that Shaped America?
I was completely baffled by a wall that had the title “Banned books that shaped America” ! This was on our last trip, when we went to our newest discovery ” The Bookmonster “in Santa Monica CA. Of course, I had to take a picture or two to share with you all.
Then it made me wonder, how many of these banned books I have read and how many of them are considered “classics” now? Now if you are wondering check out the pictures as well as the links in this post.
When we got home, I had to do a little research, and based on that, I discovered that in September there is a “Banned Books Week” check out this link and enjoy the read about some of these banned books. http://www.bannedbooksweek.org/censorship/bannedbooksthatshapedamerica
In my research I have also discovered that many of these books have been frequently challenged in my life time. It was hard for me to believe, but who would have guessed there is the American Library Association who receives all the requests to ban some of the books. We claim to be a country that has so much freedom to express our views, boy did I get surprised. So, can you imagine how much harsher other countries are, when it comes to the freedom of expression via the printed medium.
When I saw the title “ Fahrenheit 451” it made me smile, because Ray Bradbury wrote about books being banned and burned, who would have guessed that his book was up on the “banned book list”. Too bad I did not know this before. Diane and I have met him on numerous occasions and had I known this I would have loved to hear his views about the irony of him writing about books being banned and his was on the chopping block too.
