Several people (and one of my favorites) have questions about just HOW to add a YouTube video to their posts. Not everyone is familiar with HTML or embed code, so I thought the best way to help is to actually create and embed a video to demonstrate. I'm using Veoh.com for this, because their quality is better for viewing the text. [ the process for embedding from Veoh.com is exactly the same, by the way, but see my warning below ] Edit: If you can't see this top video, keep reading. It was uploaded at 9:05am PST.
For most uses, YouTube is fine (and certainly faster). Hopefully this will help.
If you don't know how to copy and paste, we built a little tutorial to help. I know some of you reading this will be saying, "Seriously, someone doesn't know how to copy and paste?" Yesterday I was reminded not to assume anything. I was on the phone with a new client and said, "just" copy and paste. They then said, "I'm sad to say this, but I don't know how to copy and paste." So, if you don't, don't be ashamed. Just click on this link... How To Copy And Paste
Here is what the same video looks like on YouTube.
I want to give you one warning about Veoh.com. As I write this, the video you see above is not finished loading - after 2 hours. You can imagine how much fun I'm not having waiting to take this post live. The YouTube version was ready for viewing in 10 miinutes.
OK, another 30 minutes have gone by... so, I tried another service, vimeo.com, to see if the text was crisper. It was and here's another sample for you to view. Maybe Veoh will finish soon and I can post this thing. One of the things I liked about vimeo was how they updated me on the status of the video. Imagine why I'd be happy about that right now! Here is how they update you.
OK... well, as much as I hate to do this, I'm posting this as is. It is now 12:28pm PST. As of this second, almost 3 1/2 hours later, the Veoh.com video is not done uploading. The quality, when done, will be excellent. Perhaps when you get to this post it will be there and all of this rambling will seem humorous. Or not. :)
I'll come back and let y'all know how long the Veoh.com video actually took. I'm hoping my emails to their customer service will provide an answer. I love the quality of their videos, but the delays in processing the video files seem a bit out of line. The Vimeo.com video finished in less than 10 minutes as well.
Doh! I wanted to add a You Tube video clip to one of my posts and had not even NOTICED the HTML button. Do I feel silly now!! But I DID get the video (kind of) in my post. I inserted a picture, then added a link to the picture itself of the You Tube video I wanted to use. Glad to have someone point out that very obvious button right beside the one I used instead! And, nice to hear your voice, Jeff.
Oh, if you want to see how I tried to get around not knowing how to do this, it was in my post about Cass Scenic Railroad. Click the train picture at the top to go to the video. It worked, just not as well.
OMG Jeff - how did you do that??!! I loved the voice tutorial, you should do all your posts with your voice - pretty cool and THANK YOU! Talk about spoon feeding us, no?
ooppss TLW, i forgot to mention.. i did use your, but forgot to change it in the second spot.. you need to use the code below. IT IS YOUR VID.. :) here is your code. i stole it!! :)
Ines.. just change the letters is these two (bolded) spots and you'll have it. it took me a minute to figure it out. you'll get them from the embed link in you tube.
for some reason on PC, it doesn't work straight from the code in you tube.. at least not for TLW and myself.
Jeff, so you jsut copy and paste staright from you tube? is this were you tell me that PC's suck? hahaha
IT IS NOW 2:15PM PST AND THE VEOH VIDEO HAS PROCESSED! As you can see, the quality IS excellent. Worth the wait? I think it depends on the application.
TLW - I'm on Explorer right now and only see a big box with a little emblem on the top left corner....no video. So it wouldn't be a bad idea to try it from firefox. If the guys in AR knew that this would be such a problem, they would have never added the HTML option.
Jay, i wish i could surf stuff like. i only weigh 165 duuuude!!!
TLW, it may have locked up becuase we have a lot of vids on here. so the poor little PC went AARGGHH! and that code you just posted has extra junk in the truck that is making it not work. Ines is having the same issue.
Jeff, there is clearly a difference of how this codes act in MAC and PC -or- its an Internet Explorer thing.
but this is almost 'fun' in a terrible and mean in a Dr. Evil and mini-me kinda way.. kinda like watching fish flounder after you pull them out of the ocean!! hee heee...
Hey Jeff,. i did a draft post to test the vid.. and then added another vid.. no problem. then when i tried to add the exact same code again (#3), it failed.. but the 1st two showed. so i thought there may be a limit. but i guess not, as there are several here. :)
now my post is not showing the vids. and i didn't edit the post or TLW's comment. not sure what is going on. may the AR dude are working? did TLW edit her 1st comment vid on my post?? there are too many factors, I'm gonna let it ride til tomorrow, incase its the AR dudes. What a post,.. embed vids like this and the vid doesn't show!! haha!
I think TLW changed hers from the surfing vid to another (in this thread).. She's getting good at this. that is borderline dangerous!! :)
hey Jeff. i'm going to go out on a limb here.. but since your MAC is able to copy and paste the entire code without issues, then the page loads fast. for the PC >cough, cough< users, there are some vids on this page that are not showing... (5 of them to be exact). and that may be slowing down the load time for us. its working to load it, once it hits all the errors and can't do it, then it loads.
i dunno anymore.. just a thought, er uh,.. something i heard. a little birdie told me. it wasn't me. i'm not a computer geek! :)
Hi Jeff I just want to say thanks for the tips. I just posted a stupid little you tube demontration on my blog and I couldn't believe how easy it was. Thanks to you and Nick M. keep up the good work guys much appreciated.
Hi Jeff - is there any particular software or website you recommend for editing videos? I bought the little Kodak Camera you recommended, have done a couple of short videos, but would like to edit and add music. Real Estate Shows is only for still photos right? Would love to hear your opinion.
Ines, for editing video, working from the desktop is always best. I'm a MAC guy, so my life is made easier by the iLife suite that comes standard on every MAC. Nothing, and I repeat, nothing on the PC comes close to matching the quality and ease of use. Unfortunately, I have no recommendations on the PC side. If someone out there does, please help!
As for RealEstateShows.com and video. Yes, our Shows are created from still photos. But we have a little surprise up our sleeves that will be ready for announcement in a week or two. :)
Ines, we can talk later. i can suggest some stuff, depending on what you need to do.
Jeff T is right.. MAC has great video & graphic design + awesome CAD (from what I hear).
Jeff L, cool to note.. now that is going to open some possibilities.. i think. if so, you'll soon see :) update: ah yes, a better toy.! time to take it up another notch. hee heeee it works! Thanks for pointing that out Jeff. i'm glad i juiced it while i could with that post :)
now, maybe i should get off this guy's internet connection ;)
I have been trying to embed for two days. Now I know why I couldn't. I was going to ask Hubba aka Jeff Turner, but as you know he's been understandably preoccupied :-)
This tutorial is priceless and timeless. After Googling How to Post a YouTube video and coming up with some crazy results I decided to go to my favorite ActiveRain and sure enough, here is your post...perfect!!!!
YouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune.
YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time.
Manual download is not the only option with YouTube Robot. You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed). For example, you can plug in iPod, select the video, go to bed, and when you wake up next morning, your iPod will be ready to play new YouTube videos.

OK, now I am really suffering from posting envy. I watched the instruction video twice, (well done by the way) did everything step by step, even wrote down the steps to avoid short term memory loss...and yet, it isn't working for me. We turned off the "embed" option when we posted these videos on You Tube because we didn't want anyone to pick them up and use them without our knowledge, so I went into the "owner" options, copied and pasted the code, saved the post as a draft. The You Tub screen shows up but when I click on it to play, it says the video is no longer available. HUH? Did I miss something along the way?
Wanted to see if this works for me.
If you see this video on YouTube, please comment & rate. ; )
Jeff, what is happening when I see the red x and no picture? ~ JC
Jeff: I was going to upload video, and as now I know that there are instructions to everything in AR, I searched and found this. Great help. Not wasting 2 hours to figure this out is great. Thanks, Tere
Jeff - I have followed the instructions and only see the square with the red x. None of the videos in your post or the comments have loaded for me as well. Just a lot of squares with an icon in the upper corner. Help!
