With the holiday season around the corner, many individuals in nursing homes are forgotten, so what can we do to spread joy at this time of year? There is always an opportunity if we look for it.
I stopped at a nearby retirement home and approached the activities director about whether they had Sunday church services and if anyone played the piano. She cocked her head to ask if I was interested. My skills are rusty, but I replied affirmatively. She handed me the activity calendar to select a date for my debut.
As I left her office, I heard piano music wafting through the hall, so I inquired about it.
The Activities Director informed me that a 106 year old resident was given carte blanche to play whenever she wanted. The lamp in the photo was brought from home so she could read the music.
I cannot tell you how uplifting it was to hear her play. Despite her advanced age, her fingers tickled the ivories.
When she left for Bingo, I timidly approached the piano and softly began to practice. There were a few blunders but no-one seemed to care.
This is not what I expected. I went to the nursing home to volunteer my time and meager talent, but walked out inspired and blessed.
We should use our talents while we can, as long as we can, and not squander them. If a 106-year old lady can still play the piano, imagine what WE can do if we put our minds and talents to it.
