Grand Rapids Volunteers and Donors make BMX possible!

By
Education & Training with GLREA

I shared in my post BMX is Back in Grand Rapids Michigan the efforts of local group Helmets On! to bring BMX racing back to the Grand Rapids area.

Guess What!?! TODAY IS OPENING DAY!!!

gr bmx beginnings

A VERY hard working, dedicated crew of VOLUNTEERS have poured their hearts and pocketbooks out to make this dream a reality. Transforming this pile of dirt (one man's junk is another man's treasure) which was donated from the Calvin College construction site to this....

GR BMXwhich still doesn't look like much....

unless you know what you are looking for!

This crew has fought the Mother Nature and the weather at every turn (no pun intented!)

As the construction equipment was on overtime last night trying to get this track in shape for an opening day race, droves of neighborhood kids, young and old, came by the track to see what was going on....

Tim Irwin, West Michigan Technical Supply says, "It's all for the kids. So many of these kids are great kids, they have just never had a chance to really shine at anything."

Tim IrwinTim has been the instrumental force in spearheading this effort spending the last three years of his life working to secure this opportunity. This track will prove to be a premier track not only in Michigan but in the midwest...quite possibly the nation.

This BMX track sanctioned by the NBL has quite a story behind it...the people, the volunteers, the donations...but mostly the riders. I will be back to write more about these gems we have in West Michigan.

For now, if you are looking for something fun and interesting....

We hope to race today....further improvements on the track will continue to shape this treasure of clay...

and help form the youth of today into tomorrow's leaders. We expect there will be many diamonds in the rough...some of the strongest, fastest riders in the US who will come out of the neighborhoods in the Greater Grand Rapids area.

Kids who have just "never had a chance to shine" can now shine....

Directions can be found here: The track is located in the old Southwest Little League park, between Plaster Creek Family Park and US 131. The address is 580 Kirtland St SW, Grand Rapids, MI.

Registration begins at 1pm, racing at 2:30....

Bring your helmet and your bike....or just participate as a specatator (always free!) and experience the heart and soul that has gone into this project....

As always, volunteers and sponsors are welcome!!!!

More later...there are so many volunteers and sponsors to mention it will take many blogs!!

For now, Riders....Watch the Gate!!!!

I have a handle on your market!!!

Thank you for such a good post.  There are so many ways we can give back to others, it is impossible to not be able to be positive about people.  How about showing a video of the races when you can.  I used to ride but now I am older.  Maybe I could put some smiles on peoples faces if I were to do something crazy like that again.

That sounds great. I have a 21 speed mountain bike. I may have to take a ride down there myself and check it out.

Hi JaneAnne! We would love to have your crew help us out! I have seen it all from IT & computer programmers pouring cement to company president's shoveling clay...how fortunate we are to have people with such heart! Your crew would fit right in!!!

Hi Wayne! I agree with your thoughts about it "being impossible to not be able to be positive about other people." This is just one small example in the grand scheme. Bless all the volunteer's families who have been so supportive of the hundreds of hours that have gone into this.

I'll get some video up when we get into the season. In the meantime, you can watch my daughter, Alicia Bigelow, at the Freedom Nationals held in Woodbridge VA. She is in the 17 & over Women. She has a pretty good run on day one, pretty good crash to watch on day 2. Check it out! (she won't like that I posted this! LOL!)

You could check out some great Georgia tracks...I ride with Shayne Robinson at Peach Tree City BMX when I ride the national events. Shayne is a gem with her pink socks and helmet!!! You would not only put smiles on faces but also inspire youth if you were to do something crazy like this again!!! Thanks for the comment!~

Hi Robert! I didn't see you at the track today but was mighty surprised with the crowd we had!                    Over 30 riders and many spectators and volunteers! We are always looking for more people to participate. The track still needs some work to get it in top shape but it was fun to ride and see all the young and old kids enjoying it! We had many riders who rode their first race ever today! Check out GR BMX for more information. We will have practice and races Tuesdays and Saturdays and would love to see you out there!

No one sits on the bench!

Hi Joan, It's alot of fun and good for the soul (and gluteus maximus!) Best way I know to get the heart pumping!

You have two NH NBL tracks - pretty good for the size of your state! Rye Airfield and Enfield Whaleback Mountain. I don't know how close they are to you. You can get links at www.nbl.org and check one out in person! The ABA BMX is the other sanctioning body. Jeff Geoghan's kids are riding with this sanctioning body in Pennsylvania. Jeff bought a cruiser (type of bike) last year and I can't wait to see pictures of him riding it!

This year BMX makes it's Olympic Debut !

If that doesn't qualify it as a true "sport" I don't know what does! LOL!~ You can check the Olympic Schedule  for this and other events!

Mary, excellent ThemThem to Tim and the volunteers. This brings back some memories, I use to tour the circuit. Even raced against PK Ripper, which was one of the best back then. Great to see GR will have a track again.

Hi Duane ~

Thank you for the compliment! It's always easy to write about great people like these!

PK Ripper! How cool is that! You will have to get to GR and get on the track! Lots of "old school" guys involved. Gordy from FreeWheeler has shown tremendous support for the track. You may remember Gordy.

This track is designed with two pro sections which should pull many of the big name riders to Grand Rapids! (I think the only track in the US with two pro sections) Let me know when you are coming this way and we'll have a bike there for you!!!

HI Bonnie ~ There were a couple of great tracks in Wyoming and Wayland back in the day. Actually, the Wyoming Michigan track had one of the largest riderships in the US. I don't know how old your son is...I never was exposed to this when I was younger myself. Now here I am in the ladies class riding! How fun is that?

Pass the word on to people. We are fortunate to have a track, especially of this magnitude, in our area. Our family has been traveling a considerable distance to tracks. With the rising energy prices this track is a welcome change! Not to mention the driving time it cuts out for us!

I, on the other hand, am "tail-end charlie" in the 41-45 Cruiser Class.  I'll keep pluggin'!

Too bad your track is NBL - we could come out for a National...

Hi Jeff! Congrats to your son and good for you for plugging away! I know there are no slouches in your age class!

My daughter rides some ABA in the winter months because there are not many close indoor NBL tracks! Unfortunately with how this summer has been going I have not been able to get out to the track as much as I would like! I'll have to send some updated pictures...it's looking great and they have had great turnouts!
