Life Begins With a Modem

My friends and family thought I had dropped off the planet.
One friend even called to make sure I wasn't dead, or mad at her!  It all began about 48 hours ago, when I noticed I had lost Internet connectivity.  We don't know what we have until we have lost it.  It wasn't only e-mail, but Netflix streaming too.  I also use my smart phone to surf the web here at home.  Alas, it too was gone.

I called my provider (AT&T), and they sent out a tech early this afternoon.  It wasn't only a modem that needed replacing, but new wiring here at the house to replace the aged stuff that wasn't serving me well.  Gratefully, they sent out Don, Who spent the next 3 plus hours working hard to restore connectivity.  I was impressed with his skill and knowledge.  I was envious of his stamina, while he mastered ladders, wire, and keyboards to get me up and running once again.

I must admit I kind of enjoyed the time away from the matrix.  I shoved a couple movie DVDs into the player and calmly munched popcorn like a kid again.  I even read a few chapters of a real paper bound book.

Alas, when reconnected once again, I found 128 email messages.  Once the spam was whittled away, there were 67 messages left to respond to.  Life within the matrix begins once again!

Myrl, glad you are reconnected!  It is true though, once you get used to it, it's not all bad not to be available and reachable to everyone all the time!

I've kept that old phone for many years.  You never know when I might need it.

I get that feeling of stress when the internet goes down when it comes to my work. On a personal level, alone, I wouldn't be all that stressed.

At least you took advantage of the outage to enjoy a movie or two. Hopefully you didn't miss anything urgent. It's a helpless feeling when we are "disconnected".

Nina Hollander and Pat Starnes, Brandon, MS - You are both right when it comes to feeling disconnected or stressed when it comes to our business and loss of connectivity.  However, I was able to handle almost everything for the 48 hour period with my cell and land line.  Had, I needed to rely on the internet, a neighbor would have allowed me access.

Good morning Myrl. This could be me too. My service in my small town is poor at best but now that I found an old transistor radio I can function just fine. Love the photo and the old phone

If my internet isn't working in the morning, it puts me way behind for the whole day, haha.  I rely on it working!

I remember going into a special NAR Board of Directors meeting in Chicago to change Realtor.com policy. They made us give up our electronics for three hours and it was like what heroin withdrawal must feel like.

Oh my, what a great attitude you have, Myrl. Admittedly, we'd have been stressed without our ability to connect to the interet for 48 hours. Unless we'd planned it in advance. :)  Good for you, and welcome back. Ha.  D

Myrl I got to hand it to you for being so calm during the 48 hours you were disconnected.  I would have been climbing the walls ...... LOL

Love that photo and your story too! Where would we be without Internet connection? You're right, life begins with a modem, a reliable one that never quits. But isn't it fun to be diverted and do something else while you're waiting for the techs to get it back up and running?

Stay connected and have a great weekend!

Myrl, this would be so traumatic for some agents. I would find it a good time to do just what you did.. relax, watch movies and read a good book.

"A real paper bound book."  I love it.  I love to read but there doesn't seem to be any time with all the tech stuff we've got going on.  I hope you enjoyed your DVD's and real reading time and are glad to hear you are up and running again.

Myrl,

We had a network outage I believe it was all ATT users we could not make phone calls or receive them network outage. It was crucial wow knowing I could not make a phone call or receive one was scary.

Most of us have experienced that feeling. A few weeks ago, I had my tech set up a new computer on a Friday. It worked five minutes at a time...took days to figure out that the computer itself was a defective one.  At least I had my iPad and phone working.  Glad you are rewired and back in business!

It is nice to spend a few hours or even days without internet, but it would be difficult to loose it longer than that:)
