Susan.....  good post and it's kind of funny, because living in South Jersey, the only thing in 20 yrs that really has hit this area is the major floods that hit near by about 3 years ago. Sure, we had like 3 to 4 feet of snow in 2 days back in the early 90's.... other than that, it hasn't been bad. Some Eastern parts of Pa. get bad rain storms and sometimes tornado's. I need to check out your links.

I chuckle when people from CA move to Dallas and want to make sure the area they're looking at isn't on a fault line.  It's funny how people take their fears from one region and apply it to others.

Biggest Disaster to hit SW Florida in years are all the " DOOM and GLOOM " Media people and a few Realtors who are supposedly at the top of there game playing the DOOM and GLOOM thing too. Sorry if I derailed your post Susan, but thats what hit me when I read the post...

Donna, yeah sometimes I get questions about things I've never even heard of because it doesn't pertain to here. Yes folks, real estate is quite local in nature.

Jay, yeah that too...I know who you mean. But they want under priced listings right? Glad to see you still visit active rain.

Jay -- There is a difference in presentation.  I think Susan was sharing with how to handle people's concerns.  As I watch World News Tonight and the tornados that his Alabama,  I really prefer Hurricane's, and snowstorms.  Those you have warning and can prepare for.  I don't do cold, so Florida Hurricanes I have to deal with.

Susan is right that we as Realtors must share the pros and cons in living in an area.  People make decisions for many reasons, it is the informed home buyer that will be happier in the long run.  Even if natural disaster strikes.

Hi Susan, I hate to disagree but I believe I live in PARADISE!  The only thing on your list in Idaho are fires.  We are blessed beyond words!

In beautiful Bend , Oregon...we have severe lightning which often starts the many fires we contend with each summer. They are usually controlled very quickly but can be scary at times. I guess we all have to deal with something in our neighborhoods...I still wouldn't choose to live anywhere else. : )

I enjoyed that post.  Danger lurks everywhere.  In fact, we are under a tornado watch this evening until 2AM. 

There is one "natural disaster" that is more of an issue for "us here in more urban areas" that I don't hear many talking about.  More often than not, I am coming across homes that have to be fumigated due to bed-bug infestations...and be aware those little blood-suckers are very difficult to get rid of as they can live up to a year without feeding.  With warmer summers and winters that seem to take longer to set it, if you know anything about bed-bugs, this makes for prime breeding time.  Has anyone yet come across homes where this has been an issue?  I would consider this a natural disaster of a less conventional type that can have implications for homeowners. 

More conventionally speaking, last year here in NYC, some insurance carriers decided to declare parts of Brooklyn "off limits" leaving homeowners with fewer options for insurance.  The reason was that certain areas were considered to more vulnerable during a hurricane.

'Nough said.  I think I'm going to move on to a more cheerful topic now...lol 

Where I live in So. Cal we get two fires a year, then the earthquakes.  I love the fact while we live outside of Los Angeles we must have all buyers sign a disclousure notifying them that they live in earthquake area.

Hi Susan!  I'll take a blizzard over any of those other things listed.  In a blizzard, you just make sure you get to the store for food and drink, hunker down for a day or 2, then it's life as normal.  And heavy-duty blizzards don't happen here too often anyway.....    I've been through hurricanes (I am from Florida originally & have plenty of family scattered all over central Florida) and tornadoes and terrible lightening storms.  The other things you listed scare me too much.  Blizzards - piece of cake!

not so much doom and gloom, but a reality check...up here in New England we have floods and Noreasters, as we call them, to look out for... Rhode Island is one of the highest percentage of coastline per land area in the country, and so we have lots of coastal flooding zones, and the associated headaches of purpose built insurance... not that this is doom and gloom, but it is the reality of selling real estate up here...

Dont get down about doom and gloom, just look out for the interests of your clients. Get thejm the deal they deserve (or sometimes, a deal better than they deserve) and keep on truckin' as they say...

Severe Thunderstorms occour here in Missouri. We have extreme seasons, COLD winters, Flooded Springs, HOT summers and dry Fall.  The only thing we don't have are hurricanes and severe earthquakes. We have had a tremor or two. I hate the winters (one snowfall and I am ready for spring).  I do love a good thunderstorm.  I have met people from Florida and California that have moved here who were A: surprised at having a basement and B: after the first severe thunderstorm kept talking about how all they had in their previous state was heavy rain.
