Countdown to Thanksgiving -- thankful for rain...and the sun

My husband and I had the opportunity to get away for a quick one-night stay in nearby Pacific Grove yesterday.

The 2-1/2 hour drive there took almost 4 hours, what with heavy traffic and heavy rain. Spin outs, an upside down car, flooded roads in spots, and other mishaps made for white-knuckle driving, but we arrived safely.

After checking into our hotel (which was without power due to the storm) we donned our trench coats and hats and set out on our favorite walk, the old railroad grade (now a park) to Asilomar, down to the beach, and along the walk on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, with the wind howling and the rain pelting down.

Rainy evening along Asilomar State Beach

After a fine dinner at our favorite restaurant, Passionfish, we returned to our hotel to find power restored, a good omen with which to end the day.

This morning we woke to crystal-clear skies and sparkling ocean views. We continued our walk from the day before along the bluffs over to Lover's Point, then up to the town for a bite of lunch before heading back to San Francisco.

With the day so exceptionally gorgeous, we opted to drive up Highway 1, hugging the coast the entire way, with a stop at one of the beaches for a bit, and a visit to my friend's chocolate shop, Sweet55, in Half Moon Bay. Once we reached San Francisco, we eschewed the freeway and direct route home, continuing along the coast, to the Cliff House, into Lincoln Park, the Presidio, and city streets home.

We arrived home happy, relaxed and very thankful, both for the rain which we definitely need and for the clear skies and sun which followed. A bit of adversity heightens one's awareness and appreciation for what is easy to take for granted.

Hi Lottie

What a special time that was. Life is often not perfect and throws us surprises but it's what we do with it and how we view it that turns adversity and unpleasantness into just another life experience. And you shared such wonderful photos with us.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Jeff

Lottie, sounds fun, except for the white knuckle drive.   We went to Monterey, Pebble Beach and Carmel, but missed Pacific Grove.   Looks beautiful.

Lottie Kendall - Your posts reads like a novel. One in which I wouldn't want to put down. It's a page turner!!!

What an unexpected commute with that torrential rain - but you made it! You didn't give up and you enjoyed it all. Getting out of the car and walking is something I would have done too. Lucky for you, your man was by your side and you explored the old railroad grade down to the beach with wide-eyes and wonder.

What a difference a day makes. The sky is so clear and the ocean so blue after the rain... I love how you took it all in and described your quick one-night stay that was packed with excitement, renewal, and a pre-thanksgiving menu blended with happiness, togetherness, and joy.

Hi Brian England - this last storm was the first meaningful rain we've had since March 4! It washed away the dust and dirt that had accumulated, leaving everything fresh and sparkling. We loved it -- and the sunshine that followed. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Hello Joan Cox - of the 3 towns that make up the Monterey Peninsula, Pacific Grove is my favorite. Monterey has tons of wonderful old California history; Carmel charming shops and Ocean Avenue, but Pacific Grove has the wild natural beauty that appeals so much to me.
