Should Real Estate Agents STOP Doing Their Own Bookkeeping?

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with Royal LePage Dynamic RE / Pro Ledger Bookkeeping Software

I know lot of real estate agents who constantly struggle to get their bookkeeping done.  Has anyone tried using a virtual bookkeeper?  Thoughts about hiring this part of the business out?  Thoughts on using a virtual bookkeeping service such as this one?

Should sellers go FSBO?

Should Realtors do their own bookkeeping?

Same answer for the same reasons.

good thoughts ... yes, especially given the nature of agents being more people versus numbers oriented..  can be a real challenge for many...

I take 2 minutes everyday and do what book keeping I need to do.

It is not hard.

yes, best to keep up with it.. when it piles up that is often where the troubles begin.   The 2 challenges 1) "do it".. and 2) "know what you are doing"... want to know what is allowed, etc.. ..  thanks for your response.

I don't see the need for a bookkeeper... an accountant, YES!

... I hear you...rules change year to year... takes a lot of energy to keep up ... an accountant would seem essential.

Hi Steve Penner  I think that is a great idea! Spend so much time inputting reciepts and balancing everything which is time better spent on what I do best which is being in front of people. Have tried online services but it is important to have our business separate. Thanks for your post.

Certainly, can be an option for agents ... as we know time is money.  How was your online experience?

If you have time and don't mind to spend it in these kinds of activities, you could do it yourself. If money is not an issue, you are better of using others srvices. Howevere, no one gauratees there would not be Tax Audit, if there is a Tax Audi, you are responsible not the other source or software.

yes some good points... I really like the distinction between "delegate" and "abdicate" as described in the book "e-myth", that it is still important to be engaged as a good "manager":

There's a critical moment in every business when the owner hires his very first employee to do the work he doesn't know how to do himself, or doesn't want to do... And in a single stroke, you suddenly understand what it means to be in business in a way you never understood before. ‘I don't have to do that anymore!' At last you're free. The Manager in you wakes up and the Technician temporarily goes to sleep. Your worries are over. Someone else is going to do that now. But at the same time — unaccustomed as you are to being The Manager — your new found freedom takes on an all too common form. It's called Management by Abdication rather than by Delegation. In short, like every small business owner has done before you, you hand the books over to Harry...and run.

I'm too much of a micro-manager. I could never give up something as important as bookkeeping. It only takes me about two hours per month, I'm one of those weird organized people.
