On this eighth post of the "What I'm thankful for in 2017" challenge, I am thank for my community. Winchester, VA is a small southern town nestled in the top of Virgina. You can be in West Virginia in minutes from Winchester, Maryland in less than 30 minutes and in the DC metro area in under an hour. The location makes it a strategic location for commuters, business and retirees.
Winchester has been cited as one of the best places to retire by AARP and Keplingers. The cost of living is lower in Winchester. Housing is more affordable and simple things like groceries and gas are less expensive. With its proximity to the DC area, entertainment, sports and sites are nearby.
Winchester also has its own rich history. The city changed hands 72 times during the Civil War. Battlefields ring the city. Stonewall Jackson's headquarters still stands on Braddock St, as does General Sheridan's headquarters a few block away. The Civil War museum in the middle of the downtown walking mall tells the story of Winchester during the conflict.
George Washington had a surveying office here, and it is available as a local museum. Lots that Washington surveyed are marked throughout the city. Daniel Morgan, a French and Indian and Revolutionary War hero, was a resident of Winchester, and a statue to his contribution stands in the downtown area.
Admiral Byrd also called Winchester home. Another notable resident includes Patsy Cline. Patsy grew up around the corner from my family, and Patsy and my mother were good friends. She was around my life when I was a toddler, but I didn't know anything special about her. She was just a family friend.
I could go on for hours about the fun things that Winchester, VA brings to world, and I am thankful I had the privilege to grow up here. It really is a great place to live and raise a family.
