I am so thankful and grateful for my mom’s strength and her loyalty to my dad. Just to be clear, words do not do justice to it, nor to her. I look back over the decades and there are so many stories I could share.
She met my father, when Hungary was still a Communist Country and she stood by him as he climbed the Political & Corporate ladder. She stood by him when he got disillusioned with the system and he had bigger dreams. In case you are wondering, he wanted to have his family to live in and have freedom.
She was the most supportive woman you could meet, she uprooted her life, because my dad had a dream. I get it: It was a powerful dream. Never the less, we went from being in the top five per cent of the country’s well to do to an immigrant family who had to start life all over from scratch. She had a house keeper, a car which was virtually unheard of in Communist Hungary and to boot, she did not have to work, because my dad was well off enough to provide for his family.
She gave all her material comforts up for a “dream” to have the opportunity of living in the United States, where there would be “No Secret Police”,” No neighbors reporting you for expressing your views”,” no one punishing you for having religious beliefs” and the list goes on and on…
What did she get in return? She had to work for the rest of her life and become a lower middle-class mother worrying about how to make the rent, then how to make the mortgage and how to pay for her son’s education and the list goes on and on…She gave up being an artist and I am lucky to have some of her artwork even today.
So, what did I learn? I learned about loyalty at home, I learned about how to pick up and start fresh when things are at the bottom, i.e.: how to get through the tough times. I learned how to work through problems and challenges in family, life and work. I learned how to appreciate the little things as well as the big things in life. I learned to appreciate how to turn a difficult situation into a positive situation and get through it.
I am confident, if I did not have my mother to lead by example, I would not have lasted 23+ years in Real Estate and I would not have lasted 24+ years with Diane.
I am so grateful for her example, I wish I had the opportunity to tell her in person. Sadly, today has been exactly 10 years since I was in Hungary when she passed away.
