First, welcome to the first time home owner’s club. It’s an overwhelming and exciting time, and we know you could probably use all the help you can get. You’ve got a laundry list of things to do, likely including laundry, so to help you move and settle in as smoothly as possible, here’s a prioritized list of items to get and/or to do that will quickly turn your house into a home.

1. Start With Your Bedroom

Upgraded mattress The first room you need to start with in your new home is the bedroom. Why? You’re going to be exhausted from moving, and it’s the first room you’ll spend (read: sleep) most of your time in. Now, chances are that you’ve been sleeping on an outdated, hand-me-down mattress of some kind. Things have improved wildly since the in-store spring mattress days; in fact, studies show that new bedding systems increase sleep quality and reduce sleep-related pain. Having a new home to move into is the perfect opportunity to upgrade without the hassle that traditionally comes with moving a mattress. Casper, one of the first and most popular of its kind, has a selection of mattresses-in-a-box worth trying out.

2. … And The Bathroom

Shower curtain & toiletries The other room you’ll be spending some of your first home-owning moments in is the bathroom. Similar to old mattresses, old shower curtains and liners should be tossed and replaced. This is a time for fresh starts and there’s nothing fresh about used shower curtains. These have also experienced some evolution while you were showering and can now be mildew and bacteria-resistant, so choose wisely. Also grab a new toilet seat, toilet cleaning brush, toilet paper, and some new toothbrushes and toothpaste. Don’t put yourself in a situation of needing to dig through boxes to find these essential toiletries.

3. Get In the Kitchen

Ingredients for your first meal If you’re excited to cook your first meal in your new kitchen, make it your favorite one. Make a grocery list of all the ingredients you need to make your favorite food — even if that’s a frozen pizza or some spaghetti. You don’t need to buy all new small appliances and utensils, but hopefully your kitchen box is labeled clearly for you to grab and unpack. They say the kitchen is the heart of your home, and putting it to use is a fast way to really start to make your place feel like, well, yours.

4. Craft a Calm Living Space

One bigger, feel-good living room item In between moving runs or painting breaks, you’re going to need somewhere to sit and let out a “I can’t believe this place is mine” sigh. You don’t need to tackle the entire room, but think of where you want the focal point of your living room to be and set up the essentials: a couch or chair, a rug, and TV. If the room has a fireplace, don’t worry about the TV part — you’ve already got your natural focal point. Continuing the theme of fresh starts, from these two or three things, choose which one you’d like to have a new one of, and treat yourself to it. Don’t break your bank by getting all of these main living room elements new if you don’t have to. They’re each sizeable enough that upgrading just one of them from what you already own will make a big difference.

5 & 6. Take A House’s-eye View

Smoke detectors & safety kit As you go, you should always look for ways to make your home stylish, cozy, and more you, but safety first. Make sure essential safety elements like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. Then, work on putting together an emergency kit, which should include items like a first aid kit, flashlight, etc. Keep it in a specific place everyone living in your home is aware of. Also take some time to familiarize yourself with basic home safety information that you may not have had to think about before. After you’ve taken care of these basics, let the rest of the fun begin!
