We Have A Contract To Get Hurt

By

If you know much about us, you know our pets (and other animals) are  a big part of our lives.  While we're not officially a non-profit charity organization (oh I WISH I had those tax deductions!!), part of the reason I work engineering and real estate is so I can finance our efforts.

We're THOSE people. You hear about them but don't meet them in person often.  No kids of the furless variety, all of ours are VERY furry and in a variety of colors and attitudes.  We have a crazy number of cats and dogs, and they're all well taken care of.  I think those cats eat more shrimp and tuna than I do in any given year.

The tradeoff for what we do?  Hairballs on the floor, a short lifespan on scratching posts and a LOT of scooping litter of some of the stankiest creations known in the animal kingdom.

But we also get endless amounts of entertainment.  Watching them play (we even get some interspecie action since some of the cats and Chihuahuas actually LIKE each other), affection that doesn't end, and lots of unique personalities.  Don't let anyone tell you "they're just dumb animals", because only a person that doesn't know animals would ever say that.

Each of our pets is totally unlike any of the others.  Preferences for where and how they like to sleep, who comes over to beg for a piece of steak (it's actually a cat that is FAR worse than the dogs on that one), how they meow and bark, and the list goes on.

And while we could never get them to sign a contract with us, we have one with them. One that guarantees that someday we're going to get hurt.  A unilateral agreement to take care of them from when they enter our lives until they take their last breath.

Today was one of those contract days, the hurt came quickly.

Violet has been with us for 11 years.  She arrived as a scraggly kitten dumped at the top of our driveway with two mom cats and four other kittens.   We were catless at the time, and knew that if they went to the shelter they might live for 24 hours at best, so we kept them.  ALL of them.  The garage became a cat shelter and that's the start of how we got to where we are today.

Violet

Violet loved to sleep faceplanted on the office bench soaking in the sun's warmth.  She had a favorite little stuffed fish that she loved to play with. At night after she'd eat she'd run to and fro in the laundry room, causing the rugs to get all bunched up by the door, and if we didn't check, a rug would be in the water dispenser and create an overflow.

But that rat bastard Cancer didn't give us any warning that he was coming for Violet.  She was fine yesterday, but struggling to breathe this morning.  Expecting some kind of respiratory infection, the X-ray showed something that didn't look right on Violet's throat and we  headed from the local vet to Cincinnati's Medvet to further assess.  A few hours later the news was not good.  A mass on her larynx was making it extremely hard to breathe.  The odds of her making it through the night weren't good, and even the best case prognosis was MAYBE gaining her another year of life, and not the best quality life at that.  Apparently cats and upper throat problems rarely have a good outcome.

So we fulfilled our part of the contract.  We'll have one less bowl of dinner to make tonight.

And the tears fall.

Ah geez you made me cry and I don't even know Violet. Bill and Liz, I'm so sorry! There are no words to express the grief of losing a cat, especially none when the symptoms showed up so suddenly. Our cat Pia had a heart attack at 8 years, a blood clot caused her to lose movement in both back legs, and like your doctor, we were told there was really nothing to do, versus her quality of life.

It's just not easy, damn it!

The harder you love, the more you hurt. It's just the way of life. My thoughts are with you both tonight. Violet, RIP.

We've walked this same path many times in our married life, and have agreed to walk it many more times.  Our wills even make provisions for a trust to take care of our pets.  It's NEVER easy.  We KNOW these days are coming, but we're never ready.

Between us, one of us is usually home to help take care of the herd.  And if we do both leave town at the same time, we have a house sitter who is a former vet tech to make sure everyone is well taken care of.

So sorry for your loss... My furry friends are my family and I miss them so much when it is their time to go.  My collie had lung cancer and it was heartbreaking...I knew when it was time for us to take our final ride in the car

They're ours too.  We've been through this many times over the year.  Sometimes we know it's coming, some times it's like Violet, sudden and without warning.  And that's the challenge, making sure we don't go beyond what we should out of selfishness and keeping our pets.  We were fortunate with Violet, no extended suffering and we knew that we were making the right decision this afternoon.

Liz and Bill Spear ....what an incredible tribute to Violet. If she could say "Love you and Thank you...." I know she would.

A contract.....interesting....because I think one of the BEST parts of that contract that we have is we can help them not suffer. I can still remember that decision and my part of the contract with Nero on January 19, 2007. Maybe that part of the contract was so hard that is why we've never adopted another new family member. Maybe it's my destiny to be a one "child" family?

I know you've got many in the family....and you will have many more contracts in your future.

But I know you are strong and will do it the right way, just like you have with Violet.

We have good vets that help us make the right decision.  If we know there's a viable path to returning the pet to a good quality of life...well one of the reasons I work two jobs is to have the financial liberty to take care of our pets that best we can.  I don't have the biggest TV or the fanciest car, but our pets will be well provided for.

We know we made the right choice.  It hurts.  It'll continue to hurt.  Some pets are more special than others, and those in particular stay with us an even longer time.  But that's what we signed up for.

It's a "to be paid in the future" bill that we know will come due with every pet we take on.  Yesterday was a day to pay up.

BLiz, we only have furry children too and the pain is beyond words when the time comes to make that decision. I've always felt it's the only negative to being a pet owner yet, wouldn't change it. They are always selfless towards us and you showed Violet the grace she deserved and were selfless to her. I'm so sorry for your loss, no words could ever heal the hurt but, I hope that times teaches you to cope. You have her a wonderful life.

We have been down this same path many, many times.  We've always had pets since we got married.  Liz came with a Dobie named Holly :)

We know that time will heal.  That the other pets sense and help in their own way.  And there always seems to be room for one more :)

Good morning Liz and Bill. Kudos to you for your dedication! We had a yorkie who went from active to very sick in two days and it was hell putting him down. It has been a few years and we still have not recovered! Kudos to you!

It's always a hard decision and we so count on a good vet to help us make the right decision for our pets to avoid needless suffering.  We're thankful that for Violet that the struggle was short and we could do what needed to be done for her.

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your beloved pet, Bill and Liz. I said good-bye to my loyal companion in March and it still hurts. Be thankful for the time you had. Fur babies always leave paw prints on our hearts.

It is not a pain that goes away quickly.  And we've got a lot of paw prints on our hearts.  Right now 3 of the 4 Chihuahuas are playing on the couch.  The other is sitting on the floor next to me.  One of our many cats is on the table behind the laptop.  They're everywhere :)

Chris Ann, And that was our biggest concern with Violet (and any of our pets past and present).   Are we making the right decision in regards to quality of life?  It's up to us to make sure they don't suffer needlessly.

Liz and Bill, So sorry to hear of your unexpected loss of Violet.  Yes a "contract to get hurt", but as you pointed out, usually many years of unconditional love and happy moments. You are good souls to have a place in your hearts for such contracts.  Feel your pain....
