Quick piece of advice - write your articles ahead of time
Surely most folks think I'll do it ahead of time, but fail to actually plan and implement it. Debbie, you are right, it's like a marketing campaign, it needs to be planned and completed well in advance. In advance needs to mean about 3 months or 90 days in advance, whereas most folks might assume it means a week or two.
As most of you know, it can take time before google and the other search engines prioritize your article. So, when you have an article that is time specific, and you want it to rank well, you are better off posting it early...well before the time when most people search for it.
This will allow time for your article to "float to the top" for when you really need it. I'm thankful that I wrote this article about how to protect your floors when you have a Christmas tree ahead of time. In fact, I published it on September 5th. I shared it a bit on social media (mainly on pinterest) and did a couple of backlinks to it. And, then I let it simmer.
It's kind of frustrating, because you don't really know if it's going to do anything for you, but I know this is the right process. I gradually shared it on pinterest over time, and then accelerated things a bit in November.
And, of course a few people started to go to it in November, and some of them bought some items on Amazon (yay).
I intended to post this article about the best and most affordable flocked Christmas trees online. But, I was a bit busy and lazy, so I didn't actually do it until 11/11.
I could see that this week, many people went to Amazon to buy a few items. I just looked at the analytics and it looks like both are doing relatively well in search results (and that's extra nice since my site isn't about christmas). For the 1st one, the majority of traffic is search; for the 2nd one, it's a combo of search and pinterest traffic.
I just went into google search console to see the search terms used and I made a few edits on each. I think it took me 5 minutes for each one.
This year, I wrote my 2018 hardwood flooring trend post early. Historically, I wrote it the last week of the year...since that's when I had time. I was so mad this year when I ranked 2nd (instead of 1st) as someone else had posted in October. So, this year, I published 10/4 and so far, so good...I'm #1...let's hope that sticks.
And, this is a reminder that I need to start working on my July 4th post in April or May. This really is a best practice, and I really need to stick to it.
Those are my thoughts for the day.
