Perception is Really the Deception of Reality!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Mike McCann - Broker, Mach1 Realty Farm & Commercial Land Broker-Auctioneer Serving Nebraska

Today I will travel a short 60 miles back to my hometown to say goodbye to a high school classmate who fought cancer for 9 years.

Our class of '71 was a group of 90 small town and farm kids who mostly all thought they were going to be superstars someday.  We now have lost (I was reminded that it is now 9) that we know of and a few are off the map somewhere.

As I get older, I remind my younger wife and kids and friends that what we perceived in high school may not...does not exist most of the time.

Kay was a perfect example.  Her Mom's family was very successful...their family was a tight knit family and owned the grocery store, the meat locker plant, farm ground, and one was a very popular Mayor.

My wife's Grandpa worked many years for Kay's Dad as a hired hand on the farm and actually lived on one of the farms owned by Kay's family.

Kay was very intelligent and quiet and very attractive. I wish I would known her better in high school.  I did not.  I did not consider myself anywhere near in her league.

As most of us do...we grow up and move on and classmates become forgotten memories.

Kay went off to college...got married...moved half a continent away and I did not see her for many decades.

By chance, I sat with Kay and her husband, Dan, at our 45th reunion last year.  A few hours later, I realized that I had missed out on a lot of friendship opportunities.

We had a great time laughing and sharing and spending time together.

The woman I had perceived to be way above me had the same issues and concerns and successes and failures in her life that I had in mine.  We were just people.

We realized that we were not...nor were we ever...really that much different.

They say people can change...and I think my wife would agree that I had a totally different perspective on life after that reunion.

I will tell Kay's husband today that our few hours together changed my life forever.

And then I know I will swing by my families plot...and say Hi to my folks and little brother...because that is what I do every time I attend more and more wakes and funerals in my hometown.

As I write this I think of another person who I am now great friends with who I have known for over 50 years but just got to know really well this past two years.  I told my wife that I wish I would have gotten to know Dale in high school and in my younger adult years. I have hunted on Dale's property the past two years and have had a great time. We have done some successful real estate deals together as well.

I realize that I have gotten it wrong all of these years... I used to think that Perception is Reality.

In all honesty....Perception is the Deception of Reality.

Until next time...keep an open mind..

Oh what a bittersweet story Mike. I'm sad to hear of the passing of an old friend - we do have to live each day remembering to share our love with others - and to reach out. The high school lesson is a powerful one isn't it? It often takes another meeting to help us realize we really are just the same.

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD

Thank you for stopping by and for your last sentence.

To anyone reading this...do not be stubborn and not go to your reunions like I was.  I missed almost all of my class reunions on purpose. Should have went. So many things change after high school and I missed out on a lot of potential friends, laughter, and yes...even business!!

What a very tender story about life and love for a friend and what we need to do in life but often don't. I'm sorry for your loss. Making that trip was hard. So many memories... floods of them behind the tears.

Be strong and be safe. Thank you for sharing this very special day of rememberance. You wrote from the heart. Thank you.

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the loss of your friend. As we get older more of them leave us. You certainly learned a valuable lesson and gained a new friend you lost too soon and have a new perspective on life for sure.

Hi Michael Eisenberg  Boy howdy did you get that right.  I need to edit my original blog as while writing these comments I just remembered that we lost a classmate a few months ago as well.  I think my new goal is to be the last of the class of '71.  Thank you for stopping by!!

Thank you for stopping by.  I was speaking Kay's Aunt Martha...who is in her 90's and she said she would have swapped places with Kay in a heartbeat.   Kay's Dad is 90 and still lives at home.  You are right...we do not know what tomorrow will bring.

Hi Laura Cerrano Thanks for stopping by.  I have said for years that Right or Wrong...Perception is Reality.  I still believe that but also now temper that with the Perception is the Deception of Reality in my thought process. Thank you for stopping by.

Time changes all.

In July I attended my 40th reunion. It was wonderful reuniting with my classmates. The interesting thing is that the people I had the most fun with at the reunion were the "kids" that had nothing to do with me in high school. A whole different league back then. High school is so segregated...so many little cliques impossible to get into. Funny, after all these years we are now simply classmates and that's the only thing that matters!

Dec 04, 2017 07:29 AM
Sharon Tara

When I first heard of our reunion, I tried to convince 4 friends I'm still in contact with to attend. None of them was interested.

"Why would I want to see those people?"

"No interest in seeing any of them!"

"We weren't friends then, why party with them now?"

So I went alone. Had such an awesome time that the others want to go to the next one!

Hi Sharon Tara You hit the nail on the head.  I agree one hundred percent that the cliques and "pecking order" matter little later in life. And I share that with my two young adult children all of the time.  My son will have a ten year reunion next summer and he said he is not going...and I simply said that you will be making a big mistake.  Go and if you are that bored or uncomfortable...stand up and walk out.  Time will tell if he listens or not!!  Thanks for stopping by!!

exactly...those were the words I used for decades.  What a fool I was.   Fun...potential new or rekindled friendships...tons of business possibly missed out on as I sell farm land in my hometown area.   I have only myself to blame and I hope I can convince one or two who read this that it is worth the time and effort to go.

Hi Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®,CRS, I walked in to the reunion last year and saw a bunch of old people and turned to leave...and made a comment that I must be in the wrong spot...and of course someone hollered out and brought me back to reality ... "you're in the right spot McCann...get back in here with the rest of us old farts..."  Owww...that hurt. Perception is the deception of reality.....

HI Marney Kirk Thanks for stopping by.  My mind and heart are always open...but sometimes the path you are on slowly leads you away from the path you should be on.  Sometimes, when we are lucky or smart, the paths merge again.

Very hard to judge some one so far back. Some are predictable, they knew what they wanted early one and became what they told you.  Others wonder around. The popular girls, the cheer leader type got married, divorced, have a few children gain 100 #......

What is important is one needs to take control of their destiny.

Great post!  I have to agree.  My 40th Reunion was this past October. Attending it and being on the committee were both life changing events.  I couldn't agree more with  your analogy of perception and reality.   Life slips by in the blink of an eye.  Your post is great encouragement for others to enjoy their younger years while they still can!
