The Little Blog That Could

By

Connecticut Real Estate BlogSeveral months ago I wrote a blog post called Military Homeowners Face Foreclosure.  I wrote it after meeting with several military families stationed at the Submarine Base in Groton. The subject troubled me because these families, in service to our nation, were being transferred from the Groton area, but unlike corporate transferees did not have the same protection with a "loss on sale" or other typical corporate benefits.

Since I wrote that post I've worked with more military families facing the same predicament.  As I mentioned in the previous post, any military family who bought a home since 2005 and is now being transferred is facing a dismal situation especially if they used a 100% mortgage product, like VA or the Veteran's Choice program offered by the local Navy Federal Credit Union. With prices flat and inventory building, these families are most likely looking at a loss after paying their seller closing costs.

It didn't seem right and I ended the post with the question...... shouldn't there be a military relocation program similar to that of civilians?  The blog post went pretty much unnoticed until today, when within 30 minutes of each other, I received a call from a senior producer at CNN and a producer with the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.  And while it was pretty cool to talk to them both, they really were calling to see if I knew of any military personnel facing foreclosure who would be willing to talk to them.

I'm hoping that the stories they produce call attention to the problem.  I think it is a story that deserves to be told beyond where my little blog can reach.

If you are a military family facing foreclosure and would like to tell your story, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the big guys.

Linda - what a great idea about a military relocation program. I love the idea! Who in the government would we need to write to to suggest such a thing?

Linda - that's fantastic!  Just think - you're presence on the internet stands to help many people that are already in service to our country.  Thanks for making the "causal post" that stirred the big wigs to action.

Linda that's just wonderful! If we can send all our money overseas to help rebuild other nations, why can't we do the same for the men and women who are sacrificing so much to keep us safe. I hope people stand up and take notice of this post! We need to take care of our veterans.

Would you mind if I shared your post with some friends of mine?

Linda, Great idea.   Our military deserves our help and support.  I hope this will shed the necessary light on the problem and the government will come up with a resolution.

Linda, it doesn't seem right to transfer military families so often without the equivalent of a corporate relocation package. And this is even more important when so many are putting themselves in harm's way.  I'm glad your post got some attention.

A few years back when we had the Japanese bubble, many Military folks were in the same situation here in Hawaii.  They were forced to rent them out.  When the market came back they sold at a profit.

Linda, good for the exposure, let's hope the story turns out right. I have a home listed now by a military family re-locating to CA. They bought in 2005. I have asked them to do a short sale, but they are honorable people and will not. It is priced below what they paid and they will need to bring money to the table IF it sells.I dont' think it will even at this price, and even through they updated, windows, basement, doors, fixtures etc...

We now have it is the MLS as a rental. They didn't not want to do this being so far away, but I have found them a property manager. I asked them if the military would help them out and they said NO as the military tells people that they did not tell them to purchase a home . IT is very sad, not only are they losing their fix up investment, but their down-payment and if it rents will be throwing in 300 out of pocket monthly.

Please let us know when the story will appear. Knowing CBS, they will probably slam the Military.

Linda,

Terrible to hear that the people who are defending the country can't be taken care of. No priorities.

Linda, it's certainly a tough situation and very disheartening to hear about military families facing foreclosure.  Hopefully these news stories will shed some light on the problem and bring some attention and awareness.

Linda:

Hopefully something good will come out of it for them. There are so many stories like this - godo to see some attention is being given to it. Will it make a difference or is it just a news story? Time till tell. How cool for you to get the calls.

Linda -when the government is considering options for providing help to people facing foreclosure, military families should be their top priority for help. These families are the ones baring the brunt of the sacrifice for this country.

Hi Linda,
I work with military families quite often due to my proximity to Camp Lejeune Marine base, these people  have sacrificed so much for all of us and deserve much more than they are getting.  It's sad.

BTW, you should post this in the Military Relocation group.

Wow, Linda. Great job blogging about such an important topic.

Side note: if most military are using VA, FHA or community 100% programs, it is all the more important that the government have some type of plan for relocation.

After all..those loan programs are insured by the government. It's in their interests even more than any other private corp.
