An Unreasonable Client calls a Manhattan mobile notary

The lady calls and needs to have a Power of Attorney notarized. I quote her my standard notary fee for midtown Manhattan. “The notary fee in NY State is two dollars” she tells me. I inform her that I am a mobile notary and go to her, and there are additional fees for such a service. “I do not want any additional services; I just want to go to you with my two dollars”.

I inform her that I am in an automobile, currently in mid town Manhattan. I could meet her at the location of her choice for the stated mobile notary fee. “Exactly where are you? – I will go to you” is her reply. I tell her that I do not have a specific location and that the car is in motion. She tells me to give her my current location and for me to stop and wait for her; as she is in the next county (Brooklyn), and can arrive “in about an hour” to where I am.

I inform her that the area does not have street parking and the signs say “No Standing” everywhere. She tells me that she is sure there are parking lots in the area and we could process the papers “in front” of a parking lot. I tell her that the lots charge about 20$ just to enter their facility – “That’s not my problem”; I will not pay for your parking bill – “just wait on the street” she adds. I tell her I will get a parking ticket – “Surely you don’t expect me to pay for your traffic violations” she replies.

Wondering where this will go I mention that I could spend an hour going round and round the block for the hour it would take for her to arrive. “Great, that will cost me nothing” she responds. Sorry, but it will cost you a gallon of gasoline which cost me about four dollars (ignoring my time for the moment). “Not a chance – your fuel expenses are your problem” – “how on earth can you expect me to pay for the gas you use to joyride around the block”?

“Lady, will you at least reimburse me for the cost of this rather lengthy cell call” I ask in a desperate attempt to see if she will budge from her two dollar mobile notary fixation. “We both have the same expense, you pay yours and I will not deduct (honest) the investment I have made calling you”.

“Furthermore, as you are forcing me to take the subway to get to you – I will be deducting the $2.50 subway fare from my payment to you.” “But lady – that would require me to pay you fifty cents for me to notarize your power of attorney, in addition to an hour of my time, and burning up a gallon of gas, and paying for a lengthy cell call”.

What to do? Finally I found the magic bullet to resolve the situation. “Lady, I just don’t have any money with me and will be unable to give you the fifty cents”. “Well, if you are unequipped to deal fairly with the public – you should not be a “Notary Public” – I guess I will just have to find someone else who is “more equipped” to notarize my document!!”

Only in New York can this happen to a New York Mobile Notary Public
