An Evening Bike Ride with my Son

I recently wrote about my son learning to ride a bike (My Son Can Ride a Bike Now! Way to go, Brandon!).  He learned to ride on April 30th, and since then he has become a very fast study.  The only time that he has fallen was when he attempted to wave at the camera on his second day.  Since he is getting better and faster each day, it was inevitable that I had to get my own bike tuned up and ready to go.  I took it to Buck's Bikes in Round Rock, and I was pleasantly surprised that they only charged me $10.81 to replace an inner tube, air up the tires, and clean it up.

Anyway, we went for our second ride together last night, and it turned out to be some great exercise and bonding time for us.  After the ride, we jumped in the van and measured our distance (two different routes).  It turns out that we rode 2.5 miles, which struck me as terrific for a kid who just learned to ride two and a half weeks ago!

During our time together, Brandon made some great comments to me.

"Dad, this biking thing is really starting to heighten my self-esteem."  Yes, my nine-year old son really talks this way.

We passed a marshy area with fireflies and some very loud bullfrogs and we stopped to listen for a minute.

"Ahhhhhh, smell that sweet swampy air." said Brandon.

Tonight, we went for a run together, and he came home and made a "Self-Esteem Chart", or SEC for short.  It has a bar graph, and a stick figure representation of himself, along with his self-esteem "rating".

If you don't already know where he gets his love of acronyms, you can check out this post I wrote way back in October: Some Suggestions for New Active Rain Abbreviations - Do you LOL often?.  For the record, that post was the one that my wife said best summed up my personality and sense of humor.  She has known me for 17 years, so she's probably right.  In fact, looking back at it, that might have been the first post of mine to get hijacked.

Anyway, for me to get actual exercise on a halfway consistent basis is definitely a step in the right direction (pun intended), and I thank Brandon for getting me out and moving.  I look forward to a very active summer, since we are now biking, swimming and running.  Time to start working on our first triathlon, right?

I don't know what sweet swampy air smells like!  On your next bike ride, please put some in a bottle and ship it to me.  My 11 yr old talks like Brandon.  Also, rather than say please, he says PLZ.  Must be their generation.

How sweet! I really need to do some of that with my granddaughter. She is only 7 though. I desperately need to start exercizing!

NAT - I think the sweet part might have been a joke.  It just sort of smelled swampy, but not terrible.  Does your 11-year old say P-L-Z or "Plz"?  Just curious.

SUSAN - Your granddaughter would probably get along well with Aleah, who just turned seven last month.  The exercise has given me a lot more energy lately (imagine that).

I think I love your Brandon. How astute can a child be? Genetics...right? And, great parenting. Enjoy each moment. Cherish the time and memories. If you blink he will be grown. Although, when little Brandon Jr. says I love you grandpa...that's pretty cool too. You always make my heart smile.

DEB - You are a very cool friend indeed.  Anyone who loves my children is among my favorites.  Brandon is a really special kid (all of mine are).  I know that I am supposed to say that since I am their dad, but in this case I truly believe it.  Thanks for your friendship and support!

Brandon sounds like a gem. And anything that gets us out and exercising ,bring it on. For you, you are getting a "2-fer", exercise and bonding time with your son. Priceless.

Jason, Biking is great exercise for both you and Brandon.  It is great that the two of you are enjoying life together.

Jason:  It sounds like the two of you may have entered into a new phase of your father-son relationship.  Good for you !  And it also appears to me that there will be times, if there are not already, when Brandon becomes "father" to his Dad.  These kids can really surprise us, can't they ?

I never had children, but your pride in fatherhood shines through.  Your TX stories are great too.

Jason, my friend, you're a shining example of what fatherhood is all about.  Reading about the antics you and the kids get into takes me back to when ours were young.

This is an awesome story.  My girls do not have much interest in doing things like this with me any more.  However, my husband and I joined a swim team and are enjoying it.  Triathlon?  For us, maybe next year!

Jason, I really enjoy reading your posts about your son, keep it up.

Jason, LROL on Brandon's sayings. Plus being a "ratings" guy, I liked that he created a self esteem rating chart! A guy after my own heart, grin.

Nice ThemThem to Brandon and how cool is it that your exercise program includes your best friend, Brandon!

Have a great day in The Rain,

Duane

There is nothing like the family outings on bikes.  We have a trail near our house and it has become a weekend routine.  Its great to hear that he is really enjoying the bike riding.

I wouldn't mind living closer as our sons and families could get together to do some of these fun things.  Brandon sounds like a great kid.  He must get it from his mom (n,jk) to try some of your famous letters.  Good talking with you the other day.  Hope it will be harder to get in touch with you as you will be very busy this summer.

2.5 miles is really good for someone who just learned to ride.  Very impressive Brandon!

Biking is a great way to keep in shape.  It's always easier when you're doing something you have fun doing.  I try to ride my horse regularly.  It's great fun!  :)

How cute - he sounds so "grown up" already.  Nice that you are biking together - everybody wins.

Jason,

How great that you are spending this time with your son.  Whether you are biking or playing ball or just relaxing at home, the time you spend bonding with your child is so important.  His self esteem will increase just from the interaction he receives from his parents and its obvious to see he is having NO trouble in this area.  I love the SEC idea, what a concept, I may need to make one of those charts up for myself! Congratulations on being a great DAD!

Jason...to have a 9 year old have a sense of what it means to have good self-esteem is really pretty remarkable.  It also says a lot about the efforts of his Mom & Dad. :)  Enjoyed reading this post & thank you for sharing a bit of your life with your Friends at Fraiche Aire.

Seems like  a very smart kid there. It comes from the environment he is raised in.

Jason...it's great to be able to spend quality time with the kids, and to be able to throw in a bit of Nature is a Bonus to all.
