Wishing all my friends and Family Happy Holiday season.
I am originally from India and have been in this country for over 40 years.
When I was growing up in India the traditions at Christmas were different than they are here. I do not know if they have changed.
My Catholic friends celebrated Christmas . I do not remember them having a Christmas tree nor stockings.
There were Christmas trees at public places and we used to love to go to see them.
They baked cookies and visited all the neighbors and gave everyone cookies . They decorated their house with the nativity scene and went to midnight mass. They wore new clothes to mass. I used to love to visit them and see the beautiful nativity scene.
My family celebrated Diwali , the festival of lights. We used to also wear new clothes and distribute cookies at Diwali to all our neighbors. There were more than 30 homes. All these cookies were made at home. We also visited our relatives during the holidays.
My favorite memories are the lovely food items that we ate as the neighbors too gave us the food that they had cooked.
Another thing we loved about the holidays is the vacation days. I looked forward to Diwali and Christmas vacation.
Life was much simpler in those days. We did not make a list of gifts that we wanted. Our parents took us shopping to buy us new clothes for Diwali and though we got new clothes throughout the year there was something special about going shopping for Diwali clothes.
