SMILE

Give the gift of smiling and acknowledge people when you meet them in passing. A warm smile can warm up a heart. Some people need it desperately. Don't be offended if the person doesn't smile back. Gifts are meant to give without expecting anything back in return.

DONATE

Giving away unwanted stuff is nice to do. But! Wouldn't it be better yet to purchase something new and give it away to children in the hospital or safe places for people who are homeless or homes for abused women?

SKILL

Just about every neighborhood has a house where there is a need to lend a hand. People who could really use help are the elderly, single parents, and the unemployed. Mend a fence. Trim someones bushes, Shovel or sweep their sidewalks. There's lots of things you can do to free up the stress of a homeowner who isn't able or capable.

READ

Visit a Senior Center. Read to those who want to be read to. Not all elderly can pay for new prescription glasses and it would be a nice time to just sit for awhile and read while someone else can enjoy a good story. And if you're lucky enough to read to someone with Alzheimer's or Dementia, you can read the same story over and over again. It's not about the reading that matters, it's about the time you give to others.

The spirit of Christmas is the spirit of love and of generosity

and of goodness. It illuminates the picture window of the soul,

and we look out upon the world's busy life and

become more interested in people than in things.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - Joy doesn't have to cost a fortune or get people into debt. There are many ways we can show we care and mean it without expecting something to come back to us. For when we make one bit of difference, to one human soul, we never know if we saved a life or just improved the way we live. The world can always stand improvement in the most positive ways.

Have a very special holiday. Thank you!

George Souto - Sometimes we just have to get down to the basics and show that human side. Nobody is promised the world, but we can all do our part to make it a better place.

Have a wonderful Christmas.

Silvia Dukes PA, Broker Associate, CRS, CIPS, SRES - The best gift of all is human kindness and meaning it right from the start without expecting anything else in return. I do believe in  contagious and it could be a positive experience for all!

Merry Christmas!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - The firefighters are on my mind. Handing out baby wipes is very thoughtful and kind. They are working double duty and more. We must keep them in our thoughts and prayers. After all, they are breathing that air up front and it's personal. There are a lot of lives at stake.... including every plant and creature on earth. Praying for rain and safety to all.

Sharon Tara - I firmly believe if you want to live in a good neighborhood, everyone must participate and look after each other. For everyone needs a helping hand from time to time and most won't ask. We must look out for each other and make it a better place here on earth.

Hi Patricia- you have the right idea with this post. Giving isn't about the price tag or size of an item. The best gifts are the ones from the heart.

And not just for Christmas, but every day. Smile and a hug costs nothing. Listing to a friend or even a stranger is a gift too.

I Move You Home

What if for just one time, we couldn't give any material gifts?  It's easy to give to the ones we love, or who love us back.  The challenge in our world right this minute is that so many people are angry, frightened, and divided. As the days grow colder, the space between us gets wider.  I'm changing my job description to the listener.

Mary Jo Quay - Many years ago I told my children, Christmas is not our birthday but to remind us about the true meanings of life, love, and sacrifice. They listened and learned. I just couldn't understand how out of control people got with exchanging gifts, especially when it came to how much each person should spend on other people. I don't get involved in any of that.

As late as yesterday, a woman was telling me her family is arguing about how much each one should spend and her daughter is stressed because her in-laws include uncles, and aunts and she can't afford it. As a person removed from that family scene, I predict unhappy endings.

I do agree with you about the challenges we face. There are TOO many angry people making a big deal out of things they aren't thinking clearly through. And why are there so many unqualified judges judging other people? People are being roused up about feelings of injustice from times in history that we can't erase. I see universal disrespect running rampant. Don't they know, divided we fall? Or is that the goal of some invisible force we don't know?

It's as if people are gaining powerful strength in numbers from rage. People can't thrive on anger, disprespect, and accusations. Regression is not the answer.

One year I was 'obligated' to buy 22 gifts for both family and office. The office manager hinted that she expected 'appreciation.'  Wealthy cousins with a passel of kids looked down their nose at smaller gifts. My assistant expected me to wow her with an end of year gift.  I sent out $10 gift cards to everyone I had done a transaction with that year.  Only one person said thank you.  I had to rethink Christmas, what it means for me.

Mary Jo Quay - How could anyone respect an Office Manager who doesn't understand people? I would lose respect for her in a heartbeat. On top of that, being "obligated" to buy 22 gifts is insane!!! Expectations for gifts is now over the charts with madness. No wonder so many people are in debt! I recall getting a wedding invitation requesting I buy the bride and groom stocks (and they listed which ones) and how much they wanted... Politely, I declined the invitation. Giving out gift cards adds up rapidly! You're right, it's harder to get a thank you these days and that's so sad.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - You're always welcome! I love hearing from you. There are so many struggles in the world today. I just refuse to get tangled up in them all. I absolutely refuse to let anyone get under my skin anymore.

Gita Bantwal - This should be the happiest time of the year. That's why when I'm out and about I study the faces of little children. Silently, I pray they grow up to live in a better world. They smile, I smile back. I do that year-round. We should spread smiles and not violence or bad thoughts.

Inna Ivchenko - You've got the right idea. But isn't it sad that an innocent hug can be misconstrued? May you enjoy all the blessings of happiness and love.

The simple gifts you listed are needed throughout the year. Christmas would be much more enjoyable if there was no expectations and everyone could give freely from the heart.
