Social Security

Services for Real Estate Pros with Referral Group Incorporated

I don't know about you but after years of paying into the fund I expected to collect Social Security without suffering penalties. After all I had faithfully contributed for all of my working life. Once I applied to receive my benefits I was shocked to find the cost of Part B did not cover everything and that supplemental on advantage coverage wasn't cheap either. Nonetheless, I did what I needed to and vowed that being without insurance was not an option.

Every year my actual take come was reduced. Last year I found the cost of Part B was increased as was my advantage coverage, which meant with no cost of living increase my net dollar was down by roughly 5%. Bummer.

This year there is an 2% cost of living adjustment which is largely off set by an increase in the Part B, or physician, prescription and full hospitalization. So once again my money and I do mean my money is being abrogated by a caretaker who doesn't really care.

So my advice to younger folks who are still working full time is to count on nothing and prepare for yourself. We all know that life is seldom fair but always worth embracing. Remember this when you vote and hold all who would take your money away accountable. And that my friends is my thought for today.

This is the next shoe to drop in the tax bill saga. Ryan thinks of Social Security as an entitlement and should be pared down depsite it having nothing to do with the deficit.

I haven't seen a raise in my actual social security check in years.  Either there were no raises, or all raises were offset by the increased premium for Medicare.

Hi Sheila- I'm glad that you are taking out the supplemental plan now.  A friend's mother waited instead of paying for the supplemental until she was about 70 and was shocked to discover that because she waited she has to pay more for it.

Hi Sheila, that is great advice and one that we should be shouting from the rooftops. I'm trying to save and invest but it's getting harder and harder .. especially when my health insurance premium was just increased by 47% (b/c of the fed gov's decision to stop their payments to the States). Nowadays I find myself putting anything extra towards health insurance and health care vs. my rainy day fund or SEP.

Good morning Sheila.  I think we are heading for a disaster in this country as no one is preparing for retirement and costs for health care continue to spiral out of control.

Hi Sheila: I agree with my friend Gabe Sanders . It's terrible and it's only gonna get worse.

The thing I'm happiest about is I have a husband who is working and so I'm covered under his health care plan with the state of California, and don't have to deal with the garbage of Social Security and medicare. We may be the last group of people who paid in and will collect. The others behind us will just pay in and then go bankrupt.

Hi Sheila

And I fear it's only going to get worse in terms of health care and prescription costs. It's been a hot topic, and a big concern, with a bunch of friends of ours a number of who now are on Medicare.
