Palos Verdes longtime residents have different stories about how the “General Store” in Rolling Hills Estates began. Some say that it was constructed in 1928 as a community theatre, others as a nursery school inside with a small market and a gas pump.
The General Store was known in 1938 as the Rolling Hills Market. This was even before Rolling Hills Estates was incorporated (which happened in 1957) so at that time the paperwork on the market was issued in Lomita to the Palos Verdes Corp. Over the years of its existence, other enterprises were added to the market. A small US Post office open in the late 1930′s or early 1940′s, and operated for years, but was closed in 2013. In 1977 the property was designated as a historical landmark.
In 1984 Jim Kelly opened up Kelly’s Korner which still stands today as a popular deli/sandwich shop. To this day you still can find equestrian items for sale and there is even a bulletin board outside kept up by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Horsemen’s Association which keeps the public updated of horse related happenings on the peninsula.
The Rolling Hills General Store is open Monday thru Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. It is located at 26947 Rollng Hills Road, Rolling Hills Estates. For more informaton you can contact the store at 310-541-3668.
