START WITH THE WHY

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Can you answer this question?  Why are you in real estate or whatever business you are in?

Without knowing this how will you find you motivation to overcome obstactes and achieve your goals?  Motivation comes from within and that means that you cannot motivate another person.  You can, however, help create a spark to ignite their inner fire.  That inner fire will drive motivation.

That inner fire or passion is your WHY.  If you do not have the WHY then the HOW will not matter.  Knowing what motivates you is a key to achievement and knowing how to find motivation in others is a key to leadership.  Dwight Eisenhower said that leadership is getting others to do what you want because THEY want to do it.  Reach down and find that motivation and bring it to the surface.

What is your passion?  If you are not sure why not start by doing a dream inventory.  List every dream you have.  How many did you list?  Keep going until you have 50.  Which ones are most important?  Why?  What will they do for you?  How badly do you want these and why?

With dreams in mind do you have that burning want or need and are you emotionally attached to a goal to achieve it or is it something that would just be nice to have.  Many people want something but then their subconscious says, “Yeah right that will never happen.”  So, they reason, “I will try but I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment if I fail.”   They have created the out.  But wait, what are the consequences if you fail?  They could be major.

Your desire for gain is only one side of the goal achievement process.  Think about a time when you did something to avoid a loss.  The threat of loss is, many times, a more powerful motivator than the opportunity for gain.  If you have a strong passion for achievement of your goal AND failure is not an option, you are motivated to achieve.   So, find your passion and follow your dream and you know WHY.

THE HOW...  consider all possible obstacles and for every obstacle consider all possible solutions.  What is the greatest obstacle?  In other words, what obstacle if eliminated would greatly facilitate the achievement of your goal?  Now, go ahead and set up an action plan to remove the obstacle and achieve.

This is not going to be easy.  It will require changing habits and they are never easy to change.  A habit keeps us in a comfort zone.  We must have a greater reward to establish a new habit.  That reward will help us to replace the old habit with a new one which will yield a new and greater reward.  If you are passionate about what you are doing, follow these steps.  You will see a difference.

Motivated leader

This same process can be used to help others find their motivation and lead them to achievement of goals.  Help them find their why, and their benefits and consequences.  This will help them find their motivation to achieve their goals.  Funny how motivation and goals work.  For a similar blog on our website read MOTIVATION IS THE WHY BEHIND THE HOW.

A long time ago I learned to ask prospective associates "why" they worked, not "what" they have done.  I continue to be surprised at how many find the question difficult to answer in a genuine way.

You're certainly right about it not being easy - and those habits we have that make us so comfortable? Get a shovel, in my case!

People think we're REALTORS, we actually provide soothing environments for stressed people, and help multi-gen families work through transitions together. Both of the aforementioned are personal lifestyle choices for us, and our passion.

Great insight Grant Schneider , as always.  If one can answer the why, they are well on their way to achieving their goals.

Too many people get into a career focusing on the monetary reward. They soon realize that they are not living with authenticity then they seek out their why. And there is nothing wrong with pivoting. I have two friends who were successful lawyers who both felt called to work closer serving people. One went back to school and got his Masters of Divinity and is now a Priest and the other became a missionary overseas.

It's good for us to reflect on our WHY and make sure we are on track... I know I like to check in with myself every now and again.

Thanks for sharing!

Every few years I have discovered a new Why. The last 3 years was to serve my local Realtor Association and the next 2 are to serve on our MLS board. After that, I will reassess. My why's are constantly changing.

It's important to assess regularly.  Sometimes the "why" changes and you no longer remember why you are doing something.

Hi Grant, when I write out my yearly plan, I first write down the reason why, then my goals etc. That why is in front of me on my vision board throughout the year. It may get tweaked a several times but if I don't have it written down, it may be easy to lose focus..that WHY is the reason we do most of the things we do.

Our "why" may change over time so it's important to regularly assess it and adjust as necessary. Congratulations on the feature!
