With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays....work that doesn't take a holiday....rest is sometimes laat on the "to do" list. As a result, when physical resistance gets low....the cough you can hear....the sneeze that sprays germs everywhere can be the one that gets you ....and takes you through the ear, eye, scratchy throat, congestion that can come along with...the ever so common cold.
No cure you know...but here to help you through the cold/flu season are some things that may help you in the battle of attaining good health. Colds can also have a way of slipping into bronchitis and pneumonia .....and bringing more complications than just using more tissue.
It's not an "Old Wive's Tale"...there really are redeeming qualities to chicken soup. If home made soup isn't your thing....you might find a restaurant in your area and freeze a supply. When you need it most is when you feel least like going to get it. (We stay away from high sodium canned varieties.)
If you catch yourself with the first sniffle in the air.. zinc and vitamin C are highly recommended to ward off any impending cold germs. This is always a staple in our medicine cabinet. You can get it in a variety of flavors at any drug/grocery store.
In the very olden days, when you were hospitalized for pneumonia....the first thing that the staff did was plug in a cold water vaporizer and we have lent, given, always have a couple in the house in addition to the humidifier that flows throughout the house...while you do have to keep a watchful eye on the window sills that may get a bit wet as the humidity fills the air it will also land in places you don't want it as well. Just breathing moist air will help you a bunch !
While high energy is not what you have when you have a cold....changing your pillow cases and sheets can help you disinfecting the pillows and mattress pad with Lysol or other disinfectant will keep you from breathing in the same germs and recycling them again ! Easy and clean sheets and pillow cases make everyone feel better !
Can't have too many fluids...juice....water....OR ginger tea which also adds some natural help to making you feel better is tasty and soothing to parched/sore throats.
Now for Grandma's cure all for whatever ails you...cold, flu, cryptosporidium (honest - that was ME that it cured !) and most anything else you can think...is the ever famous and because it tastes so good...(not) ever lasting ....Blackberry Brandy ! A shot at bedtime and you will be amazed. If you are not into alcohol...it is the berries after all that have the "recuperative power" (this from a medical researcher client) and that is kept in the liquor ...not the medicine cabinet. Ready at all times with no temptation at all when we are well to "take a nip" .
So there you have it...everything to "stay healthy or try and get that way" when THE BUG hits!
