America's Drunkest Cities

Forbes.com recently released a special report ranking America's Drunkest Cities.  The study looked at the demographics of 35 cities.  Each city was ranked in five areas: state laws, number of drinkers, number of heavy drinkers and number of binge drinkers.  So are you guessing that Las Vegas and New Orleans will be close to the top?  Guess again.

Here is the top five:

1. Milwaukee

2. Minneapolis - St Paul

3. Columbus Ohio

4. Boston

5. Austin TX

The Twin Cities ranked No 2 for adults who reported having a drink in the last month, No. 3 for binge drinkers and No. 12 for heavy drinkers.

This isn't the image that comes to mind when I think of the Twin Cities.  I think of lakes, theater, fine arts, award winning schools,Twins, Vikings, Winter Carnival, & Aquatennial.  What's really going on?

Has the after church Lutheran potluck lost favor?  What happened to Lake Wobegan?  Or maybe, as the study suggests, we could have lots of Grandma's who have a glass of wine every night before bedtime for heart health.  I for one am rooting for the Grandmas.

I'll drink to that! Our ex-governor did say something about St. Paul being designed by drunk Irishmen....

As a resident and 15 year bartender in AUstin, I think it is amazing that there is a city "more drunk" than this college town. I quit drinking all together after serving people for so many years! Its much nicer to have your wits about you!
