On our trip to Kauai May 10, 2008 we took so many pictures and videos of different natural scenic wonders. One of them was Waimea Canyon on Kauai - It Took My Breath Away....Literally and now I am bringing another wonderful awesome site.

The Spouting Horn is located on Lawa'i (La Va ee) Road near Poipu (Poeepoo) Beach on the island of Kauai.

What is a Spouting Horn?  It is the name of this 'blowhole'. A blowhole occurs when the ocean water rushes under the lava shelf and bursts up through an opening to the top of the lava shelf.

As every wave breaks and the water rushes through underneath another 'spray' occurs. If at the right time of the day a beautiful array of rainbow colors occurs through the spray and sunlight.

This particular blowhole makes loud groaning noises and the legend is:

  • The coast was guarded by a large lizard or Mo'o and the Mo'o ate everyone who tried to fish or swim in this area
  • One day a man named Liko entered the water and the Mo'o started chasing him
  • Liko swam under the lava shelf and escaped up through the small opening
  • The Mo'o got stuck trying to chase Liko and the groans are said to be Mo'o crying from hunger & pain.

Below is the short video where I caught the spray coming from beneath the lava shelf. WooHoo!

Sally, What an awesome shot you got!  I thought only whales had blowholes, I'd never heard of them.  That place is spectacular and I loved the other post as well...worth the drive for sure!

Neat story, Sally.  You captured it perfectly. Natural wonders are always fun to see and read about, especially whe there is a story behind them.

Hi Sally - we saw some blowholes when we were there last, and they are really cool to see. Just today we were talking about going back to Hawaii again - don't know when that will be but I told Bear I have some friends there now that we can visit with while there, whenever that is. ;-) Thanks for sharing yet more pictures of the paradise you live in! Sally, you have your own Old Faithful! How fun! Can you get down to it and feel the spray or is the lava too hard to walk on?

Kathy: I loved it...the spray and that moment...made the heart pitter patter. wow. Linda: It is not safe...we can only go as far as the platform. One time a kid on our island thought he was being cool and climbed down to stand above it....got sucked down the hole and drowned under the lava shelf. Steve: Thanks a bunch...it sure brings a story to life!

You're killing me!  I grew up in Hono and have been to 5 islands and loved it.  I want to go back sooo badly.  Hint:  Don't go for a week, it will take a lot longer than a week to get a glimps.

Kauai is a second home for me. I love Hanalei area. It has great surf and beauty. I sold a home there last year right across from Annini Beach. My client is kind enough to let me use it once in a while.
