Ice is never safe...

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with WHISPERING PINES REALTY 20398180

If you talk to the Department  of Natural Resources they will tell you  that the ice is never 100% safe.

You can be standing on 6 inches of ice and have it only 3 inches a few feet away.

Wearing some kind of flotation device is a great idea.  The kind that auto inflates is a great way.

There are also things to wear to help you get back on the ice.

Taking the advice of the DNR or other agencies about the safety of the ice is a personal decision.

What ever you decide, decide wisely!

Remember, play it safe.

I would not care how thick the ice is when it comes to making a hole in it, sitting in freezing weather, and waiting for fish to bite. Now I do recall ice skating on a nearby pond in Chicago as a child. Maybe it's the rushing around on skates that kept me warm-ish!

I can only imagine how difficut it is to get back on ice after you fell of it in the water. I have seen a heart breaking video how a dog was trying to do it and it either was slipping back into water, or the ice was cracking and same result. Some crazy guy swam to the dog and saved it, but this is beyond dangerous.

HI William Feela I was visiting relatives in Chicago and they took me to the docks off  Lake Michigan and we walked on ice. The ice was about 3 feet thick but still scared me to death!

BRRR! I know that there are things to do outside the metro DC area like ice fishing - but we never get that much cold for such a long period of time these days! Enjoy your cold weather and be safe too!

William Feela great reminder...ice is never safe.  Growing up in the North, I remember that there was always someone that found this out the hard way.

A spring in a lake can thaw ice very quickly and without notice.

Bill, I guess if one fell through the ice it would be all over for them if not out and dry in just a very few minutes?
