Qi's Whiz
Maybe you're like me and never fully appreciated the flow of energy in your workplace. Maybe you innately seek out the perceptible over the metaphysical. So by that logic you're not like the ancient Chinese who followed feng shui and understood that "Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water." Maybe you're also not like the ancient Egyptians, who somehow encoded geometric magic into the Great Pyramid, with its dimensions that "square the circle."
So, I guess we could be considered skeptics. And as luck would have it and the fall of the calendar would dictate, I found myself alone in my office on Friday, December 22, 2017. It was an observed bank holiday, a transaction that needed to close before Christmas had thankfully wrapped up the day before, and I had the place to myself. I also had the choice to either bang my head against the holiday wall and try to act like "business as usual" or find a better way to get in harmony with the universe. For just once, I chose the latter.
In my immediate surroundings, I cleared out all desk drawers and file cabinets. I filled the shred bin and the trash can. Make that two of the latter. I got rid of the clutter and entirely wiped clean the surface of my desk. As is usually the case, the experience was hard to get underway but cathartic once complete. All of that crap had in some way been weighing on my soul and obstructing the flow of energy in my workspace. But before you cue the Windham Hill soundtrack, let's not get too ethereal. Let me tell you exactly how I found spiritus mundi.
The clutter in my file cabinets forced clutter onto my desk. The clutter on my desk forced my immediate workspace to be disorganized. The disorganization of my workspace caused me to hesitate getting new, complex file reviews underway. Ultimately, this led to inefficiency in every aspect of my production. Now mind you, nobody's coming to film the next episode of Hoarders here any time soon, and few would even remotely consider my office cluttered, but I suppose we all measure things differently. Likewise, we all know when we're being impeded. So now, with a spotless desk and all ongoing files organized and in place, I am officially ready to begin the New Year.
A well-known Zen proverb tells us, "Let go or be dragged." Having discarded the clutter of the past year, I am ready for energy to flow directly into 2018. You may also want to seize on this season to do the same. Qi whiz, it can be enlightening.
