Preserving Bone Health in 2018 | Something For Women 50+ to Consider !
Some excellent advice to share....
As we turn the corner into 2018, the topic that’s first and foremost on the minds of most adults would be good health. This results from an overindulgence by many during the holiday season. Christmas and New Years could easily be labeled the most detrimental to everyone’s health.
Having said that, I was inspired to write this post because of a segment I watched on TV this morning about “Preserving Bone Health.” Women over 50 are very susceptible to osteoporosis, a condition that results in loss of bone density. One fall could mean hip replacement and/or a number of other bone breaks.
According to recent research that’s been done, the AMA is now announcing that over the counter “Bone Supplements” should be avoided. They are not effective.
What is most effective is found at the gym, according to this study. Weight Training will improve bone health. Those who cannot or will not go to the gym should consider weight packs that can be worn as a jacket during the day while they do daily tasks.
It’s certainly not as powerful a remedy, but it’s better than doing nothing. I’ve been doing weight training for almost 3 years, and I’ve mastered hip thrusts.
Women begin this exercise without weights, and they add weights as they improve every week. My top lift for this particular exercise is 185 pounds.
I use a 6’ Olympic barbell with plates and the total is 185 pounds with the bar. The barbell alone is 45 pounds, and the largest plates on the bar are 45 pounds. I do 2 sets of 10 reps. The 185 pounds rests on my hip bones. I have no fat covering my bones, so I use a pad around the bar. It’s comfortable, and my hands are balancing the bar not lifting!! Glutes and hamstring muscles lift. Bones are strengthened.
If you know anyone who has Osteoporosis, it’s a debilitating illness. Once you have it, there’s no going back to good bone health. If you are fortunate enough to have Osteopenia, you can improve that condition and dodge the Osteoporosis bullet.
“Osteopenia refers to bone density that is lower than normal peak density but not low enough to be classified as osteoporosis.”
I was not and I continue to not be one who makes New Year’s Resolutions, but I have made good health and physical fitness a priority in my life. I’m fully committed to improving my physical condition and strength with assistance from a professional trainer three days a week.
There are certain illnesses that are classified as permanent. Once you have them, you own them. Walking and aerobic exercising is not equivalent to weight training. Light weights can be used. I prefer power lifting to stay toned and create lean muscle.
Women who have reached menopause should seriously think about this and make a decision to address it early in life. You’ll be improving the quality of your life, and you’ll look good, too!!!
