Maryland's  New Smoke Alarm Law

Maryland's new Smoke Alarm Law requires the replacement of battery-only smoke alarms with new alarms powered by sealed-in 10 year long-life batteries by January 1, 2018. Click on the link for all of the information you will need.

Smoke alarms have expiration dates. Both hard-wired and battery-operated smoke alarms need to be replaced with new ones every 10 years from the date of manufacture (printed on the back of all smoke alarms). If your smoke alarms have not been replaced since 2007, now is the time for replacements.

If you have questions or need a hand in Montgomery County, Maryland, call 311 to reach the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

Roy, great advice, and my inspector says when they start turning yellow, it is time to change them out.

Whether state or city requires it or not, this is great advice for all. Better to be safe than sorry. It shouldn't take statistics for new laws to be implemented. Montgomery County, Maryland does things right!

Happy New Year Roy & Dolores.

I know that distinctive beeping sound that is made when the batteries in a smoke alarm need to be changed.

Hello Roy, That is a good law to have, I think it should be a federal law, that would make sense.

I think that law will likely save a lot of lives.  So many folks simply don't replace batteries in the older models.

Out of curiosity I clicked on the link to read the requirements and they are pretty complicated!  There’s even a matrix!  I think I would just stick with the fact that sellers should replace all their smoke detectors when they list!

We got a batch of bad detectors and have had to replace in 2-3 years. I didn't realize they could go bad that soon.
