When it Rains on Your Parade, Parade in the Rain

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

It did not take me long to figure out why there is nothing growing in several areas of our garden in Hawaii. Of course, like any buyer, I can't help but wonder if this is something the seller knew and failed to disclose or forgot to tell me. I find it really odd that when I dig through the volcanic soil about 6 inches in those areas, I encounter water.

These are not big pools of water but it is constant. Maybe there is a reason that Kona has a Water Garden Club, according to the Bonsai Schefflera I found. He said: when you have lemons, make lemonade. Which is the same thing as my motto: When it rains on your parade, parade in the rain.

Sound perfect for that wet spot. And they actually get "tree" size?

Lauren Williams, CPO Well, it won't be a water feature. The ground is just soggy there.

Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor® Yes, they grow 8 to 10 feet and the tops look like umbrellas. They are sort of grassy.

Ah-ha, you bought something in Hawaii... How much time are you planning to spend in Hawaii?

Joan Cox Different than Sacramento, that's for sure. I picked up dead cockroaches and centipedes in the garden after Kona Pest Control sprayed. Filled two large trash bags with thinnings from birds of paradise. Fertilized avocado and mango trees. And battled white flies, my favorite.

Jon Zolsky, Daytona Beach, FL Yes, we bought a house a mile from the beach overlooking the ocean in Kailua-Kona. The sellers rented back from us for a while, so this is really the first winter vacation that I'm enjoying being in our own place with our own stuff.

My feeling is I can work from my home in Sacramento or I can work from Hawaii, so why not here? I'm here for December and January. Going to see Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor®  tomorrow over on Oahu.

Oh, yes, Hella is there... That's a great idea to start growing roots... Any thought of becoming licensed in Hawaii, or you tend to ride it to retirement this way?

Jon Zolsky, Daytona Beach, FL I would NOT want to sell real estate in Hawaii. It is way too much work. Most of the listing agents here are present for every showing. That's nuts. I'd be spending half my day running around town and unlocking doors, and my time is too valuable for that.

It makes more sense to me to perfect my absentee presence in Sacramento when I'm not there, and like you say, ride it out to retirement. If there is such a thing as retirement. I'm not sure there is.

Those are cute dwarf umbrellas.  That will liven up the formerly depressed front garden bed.

I had no idea that water was so close to the surface in the islands.  I'd be digging a koi pond of some sort, and growing all kinds of crops that would trive in that environment!  I'd think ginger would be one of them, and lemon grass.

Those are cute umbrella trees - and how appropriate to name your title 'parade in the rain...' :-)

Chris Ann Cleland I know the previous owners grew pathetic looking taro that just died. I planted pansies when I was here last December and do not remember the water pools. But maybe I wasn't paying attention. And it could be the sprinklers leaking, this house was built in 1991. At my age, it doesn't seem that long ago but jeepers, it's 27 years ago.

Myrl Jeffcoat Unfortunately the area is not big enough for koi. It's only about 3 feet by 3 feet. And I did try growing a ginger plant there but it wilted and fried and looked so sad I had to move it. Ginger plants do NOT like wet feet, it turns out.

Hi Debe: Well, Hella is always a blast. She's up for anything, and that's one of the things I like about her. I'm probably a bit more radical, I'm thinking, but between the two of us, I'm sure we'll find a lot of trouble, without, um, too much trouble.
