It was a sunny, cold day, about 10 degrees, but did not stop the annual Shanghai Parade from being held.
On January 1, the annual Shanghai Parade in historic Lewisburg, WV, the first parade of the season, started at 12 noon. This parade has been going on since the Civil War and features colorful costumes and creative participants. Usually, there are many participants and animals in the parade with the streets lined with families and friends. But with the cold temperatures, we didn't have as many as last year. Last year the temperature was in the 40's.
This is a 150-year tradition when anyone can enter the parade and dress up in their own wacky costume and walk with many others in this unique, extemporaneous parade.
As always, there is a New Year's baby in the Shanghai Parade. For 2018, it was Matt Peltier, full time city employee who works as a driver operator for the Lewisburg VFD. He drives the Lewisburg fire trucks and is often first on the scene when our fire department is dispatched. Last year Mayor John Manchester, dressed as the New Year's Baby, He was lucky as it was 45 degrees and sunny. Matt walked down main street in 10 degree temps.
