Do You Want to Be Good or Great?

I've known some people who are happy where they are but have so much of what it takes to become great. And maybe that's not in their makeup. What do you think?

Motivational Power Quote

Do You Want to Be Good or Great?

“Do you want to be safe and good?

Or do you want to take a chance and be great.”

Jimmy Johnson, Football Coach

As I see it . . . . . . .

Do you want to be good or great?

This quote brought back the memories of a very interesting conversation and inspired me to write this post.

After the weekly sales meeting we paired off to go on caravan to see the company’s new listing. That week Mike decided to ride with me to see the homes.

At the time I had known Mike for about a year and a half. That day the conversation drifted into a conversation about sales production. Being the the top selling and listing associate at the company it was commonplace for the sales associates to come to me for advice and coaching.

As we talked, the conversation evolved into a conversation about Mike’s sales production and his goals.

In the year and a half that I knew Mike his production remained consistently in the middle 1/3 of the company. He never challenged the top producers to move up into the top 1/3 and he never was in a position to where he slipped into the bottom 1/3.

As we spoke I shared with Mike that with talent and his ability to build rapport with customers that I had always felt that he would be one of the top producers in the company. And with ability Mike had be had the capacity in be in the top 10% of the company’s sales professionals.

How Mike responded to me shocked me.  Mike told me that his goal was to stay in the middle of the pack. He explained to me that if his production moved him up to the top producer level that level would be expected from him in the future and if his production slipped he could lose his job.

Mike told me that he was committed to stay in the middle of the pack.

Mike (not his real name) spent his entire real estate career being good, when he had the seeds of greatness within him to be great.

The question is do you want to be good or great? The seeds of greatness are within you and you can being those seeds to the surface and cultivate them to grow to be great at what you do.

Sometimes it takes just a little more effort to achieve greatness from what otherwise would have been simply average.
