It's the second Monday in January, which means today is National Clean Off Your Desk Day! What a great way to start off the new year... by clearing out all the clutter and unecessary paperwork on your desk and just get a "fresh start." Productivity experts say that a clean functional workspace is important for a productive work life. Apparently, desks can harbour 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat so this may be another great reason to clean up today.
Of course, I'm always a bit torn about over-cleaning up my own desk, as there are those who say the "a clean desk is the sign of a sick mind."
What do you think? Clean desk or not?
5 Ways To Observe National Clean Off Your Desk Day
If you adhere to the concept of a clean desk, here are five ways to "celebrate" the day:
-
Clean your desk! What else? Take a few hours to organize all the paperwork that has piled up and to purge desk and workspace of things for which you have no use. How to do this? Pretty much the way organization experts suggest you clean out your closets and homes: Make three piles or place things into three boxes labeled, “keep”, “toss” and “move.” Keep is for those things you must keep. Toss is for all the junk you can get rid of. And move is for those items that either don’t belong to you or don’t belong in your office. Easy, peasy.
- Shred paperwork with sensitive or personal information.
- Give away duplicate office supplies, but do organize your desk with proper supplies.
-
File important documents.
- Organize your PC or laptop desktop.
