Community Guidelines...They Really Are Important.
If it’s January here in ActiveRain, then Lynn Friedman’s Blog Jumpstart Challenge must be on!
Now lest you think that this is strictly an exercise in point gathering or have a disdain for ActiveRain Challenges or Contests in general, I would encourage you to look again at the different qualifiers.
They are designed to have us do things that will help our business or function better here in the community.
As to the Community Guidelines, it’s very much like the HOA of a neighborhood. If you want to get along with others in the community, it’s always helpful to first-know what the guidelines are, and two-follow them to the best of your ability.
“Get connected. At first, ActiveRain may seem so big that you could never be heard, and so small and cliquish that you will never find your place. Everyone experiences this phenomenon! Our suggestion is to start off slow; read blogs, then start commenting on posts that interest you, and once you feel ready, blog away!”
This is a part of the Guidelines that I chose to focus on. I’ve lost count of the number of members here but it must seem daunting to anyone just joining.
I know it was for me and there were far fewer members in 2008.
Here are some tips to help ease your way into the ActiveRain Community.
1.If you know a member here, contact them. It always helps to have a guide when you’re traveling in unknown waters.
2.Don’t know anyone? Call one of the ActiveRain Ambassadors! It’s why we’re here.
3.Read, read, and then read more.
The more posts you read gives you an idea of how and what to write.
In reading posts, you’ll find many bloggers you’ll want to “follow” just as you would on other social media platforms.
Being part of a community requires some amount of interaction with others in the community. So make it a habit to read posts and comment on them. BE CAREFUL...though. You don’t want to become known as the drive-by commenter who says something to the effect of
“Nice post. Thank you for sharing.”
5.Write a post!
Here’s where it can get tricky. There are consumer-focused posts such as Market Reports and Listings, or anything having to do with what it is you do. So of course, you’ll want to maintain a certain amount of professionalism.
However, there are posts that allow you to show us more of who you are. It helps us get to know YOU.
In any case, make sure that what you write is yours. Copying and pasting are strongly frowned upon here.
There are other sections covering this, and if you’re not sure about Copyright infringement, find Lenn Harley’s blog and start reading.
ActiveRain can appear to be cliquish but it truly isn’t. Like any other community, there are times when we want to interact with members we know because that’s what people do. But, give us a chance...put yourself out there!
We won’t bite!!!
