When to Update Your Real Estate Business Cards

When was the last time you updated your real estate business cards?

If you’re like a lot of Realtors®, it’s been awhile. Unfortunately, that can impact your professionalism and lead to lost customers.

How often should you update your business card? Use this guide to help you decide.

Has Information Changed?

Many Realtors® keep the same business card for years and years because they don’t have a change in their business address or phone number.

Today, however, there’s more information that matters than simply your name, address, and phone number. What about these elements?

  • Website or Blog. A website is an important part of your marketing mix, and if you have a new blog, use your business card to advertise it!
  • Social Media profiles. Being active on social media is an important way to connect. If you’ve started new social media accounts, your card needs an update.
  • Special Promotions or Opt-ins. Use your business card to drive traffic to opt-ins, promotions, and other special offers you have. This is a key way to build your list, and you can update your card frequently with new offers.

When you think about it, things are changing all the time. I’m guessing things have changed for you in the last year, and this may be a good time to update your card!

Is it Time for a Refresh?

If your card was designed in 1999, it probably looks like it was designed in 1999. The graphics, design, and layout options have changed a lot in the last few years.

I’m not saying you have to follow every single trend, but it’s important to stay up to date. How are you going to win business from Millennials if your business card was designed when they were in grade school?

Having a card that is fresh, with colors and styles that make sense in today’s market, is essential to winning business and building your network.

Does Your Card Look Like Everyone Else’s?

If you chose your business card through a broker’s provider, you may have business cards that look like everyone else's in your office.

Even if you designed your own real estate business cards, if you used a discount site with no customization, you may have the same look as other Realtors®.

Does it matter? Yes!

You want to stand out in your market. You want to give clients a reason to choose you instead of someone else. Your first impression is often your business card. Do you want to give a “me, too” vibe or a professional, individual feel?

If your card looks like everyone else’s in your office, it’s way past time to get new cards.

I was just reading on Inman today about digital business cards.  Interesting.  There's always some new "thing" coming out.  Nice reminder about updating.  My information is still good, but I need a new photo.

A new photo is great. You can also update cards to include promos or website information!

Agents don't want to admit but they AGE! Some gracefully and some NOT. I get cards sometimes with photos that bear NO resembalance to the Agent. I want to ask them, "Having a tough year?". Either that or youI'm looking at a boudoir shot! I'm still not understanding photos with their dogs or cats. I get it--I love my dog Jake, part of the family, but seriously?

My cards that I aam using now are ok but the photo is of me in 2005.  I was thinking of uusing the photo I use here on this profile because it is only a couple months old.

What about pictures? I see Realtors with picture that were taken when they first got into the biz. I change my pic a couple times a year. Right now I am getting ready to do it again. I don't look like the picture you see anymore.

Excellent point! I definitely should have mentioned that. Thanks for bringing it up!

Considering how inexpensive cards are, it's silly to let them become outdated - either with information or your photo.

Couldn't agree more! High-quality, custom cards don't have to break the bank!

I've gone with pictures and I've gone with no pictures. But one thing I do like to do is update my card pretty frequently. I also like to see if I can do a thousand cards in a year. Thus far I have not.
It's not that hard to give out 5 cards a day for a few months in a row but it's very hard to do it for a year or even long enough to burn through a thousand cards in a year.
I like to get a box of 500 when I get about 80% of the way through I order a new box and I always make some kind of change to my card.

I love that idea! Changing cards often keeps them fresh. We'd love to help with your next order - give us a call!

Great tips and a good reminder Nadine Larder.  Yes, things do change, including how we look! For Pete's sake people, for those of you with your photo on your business card, don't use a glamour shot from the 1990's! You should look like the photo on your business card, at least in my humble opinion.

Jan 11, 2018 08:11 AM
Nadine Larder

Oh my gosh, I can't believe I didn't mention photos. LOL about the glamour shot!

Catchy question, and I agree social media info should be on the business card and other written forms of communication.  However, doesn't seem like business cards are used much anymore--it feels outdated giving a paper card to younger clients who are used to working paperless!

Jan 11, 2018 10:32 AM
Nadine Larder

Good point Mary! I think they may work paperless, but that doesn't mean a card doesn't make an impression. I think it's a great way to give your info - otherwise you have to type everything in!

I agree business cards need to be kept up to date. I just had new cards at the end of 2017.

Business cards are to be used. I have seen people reluctant to give them out, they fear running out! It is the way for people to remember to get in touch with you.

Jan 11, 2018 10:39 AM
Nadine Larder

Awesome! Yes, they are meant to be used. It's not hard to reorder if you run out - and it means you're making a lot of great connections!
