Showing property in my area is a wide diversity of landscaped color. From farms, large wooded land tracks, mountain views and country living. There is also another landscaped color of Retirement communities, luxury homes and new commercial property.

Crossville, Tennessee and a large surrounding area map between Nashville and Knoxville offers just this. Big country living with a few luxury spots & Retirement living.

Now, I'm a strong believer in dressing for success or dressing for the job you want!  But at the same time "I've just gotta be me!"

I have Buyers from the East Coast to the beaches fo Florida. Depending on the type of property I'm showing them will determine how I will dress for the day. If I'm showing Retirement communities, Luxury homes or Commercial property.. Yes I wear nice slacks, maybe a suit and pretty heels. But for the most part the property I show is rural as most tend to move to this part of Tennessee to escape the city life.

When I first meet my buyers looking for country living I'm usually greeted with a big smile or a surprised look that turns into a smile!  ; )  (I wear jeans and boots)

If I'm going to be walking farm land, hiking through wooded acres to find a running creek or river, or viewing homes in rural area's.... "You'll find me in jeans, boots and a nice shirt."  The very next day my buyers tend to show up in more appropriate attire!  This brings a more relaxed atmosphere regardless if my buyers are millionaires or looking for a small cabin.

I always smile when I'm waiting for an agent to bring buyers to one of my listings in these rural area's and she or he is dressed to show luxury homes. Her heels get stuck in the mud and his leather church shoes get all scuffed up. I also notice that the relationship between these constant high end dressing agents and their buyers is a bit on the stuffy side.

This probably also accounts for a few of my Sellers contacting me instead of the agent who sold them their home.

Just remember to be yourself and try to incorporate a laid back helpful view to each buyer and seller. Most of all don't forget to dress for you environment or you'll get stuck in the mud!

(IF ALL ELSE FAILS.. You can't go wrong with a nice pair of khakis and a polo type shirt!)

I think you have to dress for success, but I also think that it depends upon the terrain what you wera.

Hey Christina,

I have done just that...( I dont wear heels though  HA !! )  but I dont go out wearing slacks and a tie while trecking through the woods.  Casual is ususually choice, but I can wear business class and have when needed.  I have seen clients respond to what you wear !!

Morning Christina- I can't blame you for dressing for the type of property you are showing, I have problems with my heels in the yards of homes in the city, they would never survive in rural areas.

Christina

I dress down or up depending on the situation. What do you wear when showing homes with pools or lake front propterties?

Wayne... So true.. Depends on what type of property your showing. ; )  Have a great week

Gary.. When showing homes with pools and lake front property.. again it depends on the area. You can never go wrong with nice khakis and a polo!  ; )

I can totally relate to you Christina. I sold real estate in the U.P. of Michigan for a few years and the other agents chuckled when I showed up in my usual business attire. It didn't take long for me to figure out this was inappropriate attire for showing Northwoods acerage.

Real good common sense approach to a job that demands flexibility.  If I were showing property in downtown Atlanta, it would probably a tie and nice shirt & slacks if not a suit.  Good post.

Christina - I agree with you completely.  Boots and jeans for rural land.  When I say rural, around here that means possible snakes, bugs....and animals.  Better be prepared.

I agree about dressing for the occaision.,  I too have seen those luxury home dressers & their clients look like they'd rather have another agent.  If you're a farmer, you feel uncomfortable be shown properties by someone dressed for the Oscars.

Thanks for posting

Christina

With all the Bears being out in our area lately, when showing properties you should wear something that you won't mind if it gets torn and something good to run in.

Christina, you echo my mantra in life. Be yourself. Sometimes casual is the right dress, other times not. I know on very hot days it will be very rare I wear a long sleeve shirt. If I could outlaw ties for men I would. Ladies with dresses or nice suits always seem very professional to me but not to look at farm and ranch properties. Boots and jeans are fine for men or women in the right setting.

I think the key is be yourself as you said Christina.  Being genuine helps create a relationship. Most people can spot a phony.  If you're a snappy dresser - then live it up.  If you're a khakis and polo person - that works too.

Christina - I dress up for sellers and down for buyers (who usually come in jeans). If in doubt,I dress in the middle - to match any situation. I agree, being yourself is important if you want your clients to feel at ease.
