It is important that the Active Rain community does not become an echo chamber, where we all agree and repeat the same thoughts and ideas. We cannot grow or expand that way. The video clip above (from Monty Python's film, Life of Brian) brilliantly illustrates the echo chamber principle.
An echo chamber as defined by Wiki "is a metaphorical description of a situation in which information, ideas, or beliefs are amplified or reinforced by communication and repetition inside a defined system. Inside a figurative echo chamber, official sources often go unquestioned and different or competing views are censored, disallowed, or otherwise underrepresented".
Recently companies are facing lawsuits for firing employees who have dared to challenge the echo chamber within their organization. Although the employees did so courteously and without insulting anyone, they were promptly dismissed, so that they would not affect the morale of the company.
“Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence”
-Christopher Hitchens, Letters to a Young Countrarian.
Think of how little we would have evolved as humans, if we maintained our echo chambers. At one time, people were banished or put to death for challenging the then experts saying that the Earth is flat, man would never fly, let alone communicate around the world by just pressing the "send" button on a flat screen!
It took contrarians to come up with these advances. As Albert Einstein said,
"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."
Personally, we love contrarian thinking, we feel it stretches our minds to explore many forms of thinking. We often engage in conversation with friends when it come to conclusions in challenging each other to push the conventional walls that we may have become accustomed to.
