Thinking about making some home improvements but not sure what it will cost? You are not alone, more than 1/3 of homeowners are uncertain of costs… and 2/3 are afraid of overpaying.

HomeAdvisor has put together the awesome infographic below with not only average costs, but also highest and lowest costs for 57 common projects compiled from real data from actual contractors because that is what they do… connect homeowners with professionals who can help them with their home improvement projects.

The most expensive projects on their list include the popular projects of remodeling a kitchen or bath, but their estimates also include refacing cabinets so you can evaluate different options.

This list doesn’t just address the biggest and most expensive projects, however. It also includes practical maintenance items like repairing a clogged drain and cleaning your windows. If you are thinking about buying a home, it can help you set a budget and consider the true cost of owning your own home versus renting.

The info above is just a snapshot in time. See their online True Cost of Home Improvement which is updated regularly based on actual project costs as reported by 305 HomeAdvisor members. Check out HomeAdvisor’s annual True Cost Report for more detailed information on home improvement spending in America.

We realtors work with awesome contractors. If the job is big enough I can beat the national cost.  If it is isolated project you are at the mercy of the handy man often charge more.

Great information... will definitely have to share.  I am often left speechless at what some of my clients think some things cost to repair and the swing...one person is so low it is almost shocking and then you have the other end as well...someone thinks it costs a fortune to remodel the smallest things

I found this info so helpful I had to share... love how it shows not only the average but also high and low prices! Their online infographic in the link at the bottom of this post is updated regularly with real data from contractors when they finish a project so it is always current. Of course these are national averages but it still gives a ballpark of costs.

Thank you for a great post. Too often when repairs are needed, it is difficult to come up with numbers for prospective buyers. I now have a score card to be able to provide information.

Great post Sharlene. This should help take the uncertainly out of the question of how much ROI a homeowner can expect to recoup on different projects when they sell their home.

There always seems to be so much confusion about home repair and renovation costs. This is a great tool to have as a reference. Thanks for sharing.
